The PlayStation Phone

The device snapped up top (and in our gallery below) is sporting a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 (a chip similar to the one found in the G2, but 200MHz faster), 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and the screen is in the range of 3.7 to 4.1 inches. Looking almost identical to the mockup we hit you with this summer, the handset does indeed have a long touchpad in the center which is apparently multitouch, and you can see in the photos that it's still bearing those familiar PlayStation shoulder buttons.

It looks pretty snazzy. Lots of people are calling it ugly but I actually like it. I'm sure it looks a lot better in person given the fuzzy photos. I think if they kept the whole phone black it would look a lot better. Specs are average for smart phones these days. Considering that next year we'll have dual core cellphones they could have beefed up the stats a bit. A 1.2GHz or higher is definitely plausible, and should have 1GB RAM but having the extra 1GB ROM will help. I would be tempted to get this phone if it can natively play PSP games. But with War of the Lions coming to iPhone eventually, it doesn't entice me as much as it would have.

There's a new article today stomping on the nay-sayers and promoting its authenticity. I don't doubt that it's real but I'm still questioning its full functionality since it's branded just Sony Ericsson and not Playstation.

Eh? But that's Android on the screen there. Android is open-source and allows you to develop your own apps... and this is a Playstation.

Seriously though, it looks like what the PSP Go should have been. Definitely nice to see an attempt at a phone/handheld game system that might actually have a chance in the market. (Hi Nokia!) Especially since I'd like to develop some Android games that would really benefit from actual game controls. Tiny keyboards and touch screens just can't take the place of a proper controller.

Doubt I'll buy one though seeing as I already have a nice shiny new phone on a 3-year contract and it is a Sony product. Maybe if I can find a used one it'd be good to pick up for game dev...

Would be nice if it could have game controls and a keyboard, but people don't like larger handhelds with usefully large batteries.

It probably is authentic, but it doesn't really look final. It does have a rather prototype look to it, but the general shape is probably pretty close to what it'll be.

How would you add a keyboard to that? I agree a phone the size/shape of a PSP would be pretty damn nice (controls on the sides, fold-out keyboard, BIG HONKIN' BATTERY)... but no, phones have to be small for some reason.

What are you talking about? I've had my Speak & Spell for a few years now and it works just fine, even for 3G. Plus, the call clarity is unrivaled.

It's interesting that they're choosing to go with Android on this one, I'd have expected some sort of shoe-horning of the PSP system software into a phone.

I wonder if Sony will promote this as the successor of the PSP.

They could be using Android as the core, but by the time we get the phone, it might not be so much like vanilla Android when we get it. Like, it could be completely locked down, though I suppose they couldn't remove the Android marketplace due to license. This is an interesting decision. Is the phone actually going to have the PlayStation name? It seems unusual that they'd use a platform that has open, free development for a PlayStation product. It might just be a phone, and not the next PlayStation.

It would be interesting though. Would be neat to see if the games actually run in the android OS or some sort of alternate OS. If they run in Android, it would be neat to see people get the games to run on other Android phones, which, of course Sony will implement quite a bit to avoid that, but I imagine someone will crack it eventually.

My understanding of how Android licensing works is that it's the other way around- the Android operating system is free for anyone to use (within the Apache and GPL) but if you want to use the Google-operated Android Marketplace app (and I think the Gmail app has similar conditions), then you have to agree to conditions from Google. So I suppose it would be possible for Sony to lock down Android, and replace Google's marketplace entirely with a Sony-operated store... but one wonders if that would defeat the purpose of using Android at all...

A totally locked-down Android wouldn't really surprise me, especially from Sony. It's already a lot more restrictive than you might expect, mostly with carrier/manufacturer-imposed limitations. You need a third-party app to choose MP3s for ringtones. You don't even get access to the filesystem outside of the SD card without hacking your way to root! It's an open-source OS, but that doesn't mean the people putting it there are going to give you any control...

Didn't Tivo do a similar stunt? Oh sure it runs Linux, all open source, here you go... oh btw it's hardwired not to load anything but our own digitally-signed firmware so you won't be able to actually modify that code or anything. Have fun!

Back in my day, paying for something meant you owned it and it'd do whatever you damn well told it. Sigh...

Yeah, motorola are pretty nasty with the lockdown on their phones but not as bad as sony. Their updates so far just seem to disable root if you have it but not fix exploits at all. It still sucks what they do, but I guess it's what they can do to shove ads on you and rip you off with overpriced services from the phone company.
