How do you think that Nintendo should have handled SMB2 in America and Europe?

I think that having separate games, SMB2J and DDP, would have been better. Then, DDP could have become its own series, as the gameplay is actually quite good, especially in the Japanese original I wonder if they'd make an "Easytype" SMB2J in that case like Square with FF4, though.

On the other hand, the DDP stuff greatly enriched Mario's world and setting with the additions of Bob-ombs, Shyguys, etc. I don't think that what they did was so bad, but sometimes I wonder what would happen if they did the Japanese releases everywhere.

I'm happy with how they did it. SMB2j just... wasn't that good, IMO.

Doki Doki Panic was pretty interesting... in fact, I actually played it on an emulator before I knew it was the American SMB2. Still, wasn't SMB2J planned for an NES cart release that was scrapped? I vaguely remember that... =/

SMB2US really enriched the series. I mean, series staples like shyguys, Birdo, and more came from it. I wonder what Mario would look like had they not made SMB2US.

If Nintendo hadn't done it they way they had, I would probably have a different username, and we can't have that

I think that it made a lot of sense from Nintendo's perspective at the time, so I suppose it's hard to say I would have done it differently... I mean, DDP was a gameplay shift in some ways from SMB1, but SMB1 was a much bigger shift from Mario Bros., while SMB2j was more of the same. Seems to have worked out well enough for them in the end, certainly.

No, no, no. Note: From this point on, "SMB2" refers to the US version.

DDP was a much worse game than SMB2. It also lacked a lot of the polish SMB2 had, but those differences are mostly just aesthetic.
Not only could you not run in DPP by holding down the B button, making some of the shortcuts impossible, but you also had to beat the game with all four characters before you could see the ending. You also had to fight Mouser a third time, as Clawgrip is exclusive to SMB2.
These things combined made the game practically a chore to beat.

I'm also particularly fond of the contributions it has made to the Mario series, so I'd rather not split the two up, especially since I have doubts as to how unique and fun a DDP series would have been anyway. Besides, the game was a Mario-ish game made by the same people who made Mario games at the time, so I think their merging was meant to be in the fist place.

Yeah, Doki Doki Panic did introduce a lot of rather interesting things to the Mario world. SMB2 in Japan just seemed like a crazy hard rehash of the same engine with not many additional elements over the old one, that the US eventually got not long afterwards, anyway, in Mario Allstars.

Given how they managed to integrate a lot of the DDP features into the SMB world, I'd say it was a good idea.

I like SMB2J but I don't know how that would have gone over back then... people enjoyed renting the pirate copy at my local video store but I don't think it would have been a success; and if it *HAD* then imagine how difficult Mario games could have become.

SMB2J is sucky. It gets too hard at the end, and I'm someone who beats today's Mario games mercilessly. It was best how they did it; DDP really mixed it up, and SMB2J didn't really mix anything except masochistic pain.

Personally, I didn't like DDP. However, Mario probably wouldn't be the same without it.

I had a post in mind, but Red Snifit said pretty much the same thing. The Mario world wouldn't be the same without it!

I like masochistic games, so SMB2J is my preffered one.

It's pretty much a more polished SMB... Personally I think they could've called it SMB1.5 or SMB+ or something like that, and release both games.

Of course, it was best for the series to release SMB2US as that.

SMB2J was like a canon Kaizo game. it was only hard for the sake of being hard, and even says in the title "for super players" implying it was made specifically for a certain market. At least SMB2US didn't outright alienate what was at the time the NES's core audience (younger people)

I remember playing SMB2U as a kid and absolutely loving it. If it had featured some obscure characters instead of Mario I probably would never have tried it. Meanwhile I'd have insisted on playing "SMB2"(J) simply because it's SMB2 and been totally frustrated and probably smashed it because my temper was quite something at that age.

I thought it was a neat extra in SMAS, but I was surprised to learn it had actually been a separate game on the NES. Just felt like bonus content, not really different enough to be its own game.

SMB2J made it to the rest of the world though. And as of such, I will always call it "SMB: the lost levels" as that seams to be official English name, and it's certainly one that fits. :3

...Can't say I ever liked the lost levels though, then again I never really like the original SMB either, so, yeah. :p

I had great fun with SMB2 though, even though I never managed to beat that last level. :<

SMB2U was pretty much the best way to go about it I must say.

SM2J wouldn't have gone over very well - I remember even playing it in Allstars it was ridiculously hard to my younger self. Mario's not a game that's well suited to Kaizo type difficulty :|

Wouldn't compare SMB2J to Kaizo... at least you never had to perform 10 precise movements in a row or abuse bugs in SMB.

Yeah, Kaizo is more about just throwing a ton of shit at you while you have to fall through a hole with munchers without hitting the sides, then run under a jumping chuck, with cheep cheeps and bullet bills all over.
