How do you put your smiles at the end of sentences? I seems weird to have a period right after a smile, but at the same time if you put a smile after a period then the smile looks like it's being used for the next sentence. If you have a linebreak after the smile, regardless if you have a period or not, your post could get big and linebreaky if you have a lot of smiles.

Personally, I just put them however but I think I usually put them as a period.

Hm, well, I'm not really sure, I don't really think about it... actually, I'm just writing this sentence to see how I place the smiley...

So I guess it must be period, then smiley, except instead of a period I tend to use an ellipsis... (which is probably a bad thing, but it's a habit I've been stuck in for years...)

I always place my smiles on my face. I'm not sure how one could do it any differently.

...

When it comes to smilies, though, I usually place them after the period. :smugdra:

Usually at the end of the sentence.

Same here, Anya... with or without punctuation before the smilie. =)

this totally isn't an example sentence

there's an &nbsp to make two spaces between the text and the smile

I hate polls like this. I don't always do the same thing, so no single answer is correct. This could've worked as a multi-vote poll.

I often put a linebreak after my smilies, but that's because I tend to put them at the ends of paragraphs. I used to not put a space between the period and the smily (I... don't think that's how that's spelled ) that might have made it more obvious which sentence it applied to, but I thought it looked better to not have punctuation right next to the smilies so I quit.

The question is "how", not "where". The place and medium are irrelevant -- only the method matters.

It varies, but right now I feel like sticking the smiley on its own line.

And now I don't.

I use them like this, replacing periods

Probably because I didn't use smileys for a long time, then when I started using them, it was on AIM, where I tend to not put periods at the ends of sentences at all.

The question asks, "How do you place them?" so the place is part of the method, making it relevant.

My statement, "I'm not sure how one could do it any differently," applies regardless, though, since it refers to both the placement of one's smile as well as one's method.
After all, I can't think of a legitimate way of smiling that doesn't involve flexing a few very specific muscles. (For example, lifting up the corners of one's mouth doesn't count.)

"How do you place them" refers as which method do you use to have them appear in a given place.

Smiles aren't necesarially done with a face. Typing ":-)" on a mobile phone after a sentence for instance is legit enough, or in the case it isn't, it is on specific circunstances.

Going further you could identify an smile of an otherworldy being, lacking the face to perform the mundane human smile. While the facial gesture is certainly human, the symbolism behind it is undeniably not limited to the muscles perfoming it, neither to the image of the gesture. Though it is used for identification.

Arguably, you could define smile as the gesture itself, and other expressions of the same nature simply being something else. However in such a case, you'd still be wrong in that it has to be placed in the face flexing specific muscles, as it can be invoked by mental imagery with equal validity, and it wouldn't necesarially involve the sender flexing any muscles of the face.

And there are those who smile showing their teeth. Not only it is disgusting, it has an entirely opposite nature. Teeth are for threat.

Always after a period. Mainly because I think it looks nicer.
