I'm not a big fan of steam for a few reasons...
But I can be sure that I will never use such service by Microsoft, it's the last company I want to support. Even more so, I believe the service will be terrible. :/ ____________________ |

Eh, disinterested. Anything I want is typically older on the computer, and if I want to get it, I usually just find a place to get it for free. ![]() ____________________ |

Originally posted by Shadic I'm not against steam by any means, and it does have it pros, I'm just not a fan for it for a few personal reasons. I'm more into actually owning a hard copy of a game when I buy, if you ask why, I can't answer that, I don't know, I just like to have a hard copy. I'm also not a huge fan of having to log in to play games you have already downloaded. (This is not related to online gaming at all, obviously) It kinda prevented my brother from sharing games with me. I also have a few nitpicks such as: steam starting to download games without me wanting or knowing. It has happened a few times now.____________________ |

I'm not a fan of download-able content from the beginning, and games from Windows doesn't add in favor of download-able content by any stretch of the mark. Steam does at least have quality games for download with Left4Dead, and TeamFortress 2 starting up the selection. ____________________ Someone needs a new signature but doesn't feel like making one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtvx8TBA5EM |

Originally posted by Gunstar GreenThis is the one argument in the whole piracy thing that I really don't get.Originally posted by LunariaAlso known as "piracy." Piracy, as I see it, is about distributing unauthorized copies. Playing a game that your family member bought and is letting you play does not necessitate copying. But even drawing the line there is ridiculous, because perhaps for reasons of convenience or geography you'd install the game on your own computer. These two actions which have the same results for you, your family member, and the company selling the game, have different legal status. This is ridiculous. I'm sure it's not unreasonable to expect some consistency from the laws I have to obey. If the first case (playing it on the same computer it was already installed on) should be illegal, then so should reading a book your parents already read, and using an SNES cart your siblings also use. This is certainly a position that is possible to argue, but the relevant laws would be even harder to enforce than current anti-piracy laws. Also, I consider it my moral duty to share cool stuff with my peers whenever it's legal. I've been lending books to my friends my whole life, and our culture is dangerously close to telling me that it's unethical to do that. On the other hand, the argument I was about to make (let family members install too) doesn't lend itself to a clear dividing line either. I'd like the law to be as simple as in the case of physical property, but it just isn't going to be. On the other OTHER hand, Steam is pretty nice in this respect, as anyone you want to have play the games you have you can just give your Steam login to. This requires you to trust them to a pretty extreme degree, so it approximates the correct dividing line. On yet a fourth hand, doing so is against Steam's EULA and is illegal on its face. Basically both of those are the points I would be contesting here if I had any energy left with which to argue stupid piracy points on the internet. tl;dr: Miasmir is confused about piracy law, thinks it should be simpler and that people should stop hating on sharing, apologizes for any resulting massive thread derail. Edit: Actually, I was going to ignore this, but your entire post was ridiculously abrasive for no reason. It's like you were looking for something to take out of context and shoot down, and I can't say I like that, nor your tone. I'm now officially that asshole who tells other people not to be assholes on the internet. I guess that's game over. |

Originally posted by Gunstar Green Now you're just being an ass at me, there is a reason I stated that they where personal reasons, not to mention how this community godly praise steam for how good it is, and anyone who disagrees gets a kick in the butt. I'm not against steam, I use the service, I just don't like the fact that I have to use the service to enjoy certain games. And with those games I can't just have a physical copy of the game just ready to install and play. I bet I'm going to regret this post once it back fires on me... *sigh* ____________________ |
