How do you refer to the # symbol?

I've always called it the "number sign", and that's how I usually use it. Like #5 for "number five", as opposed to using "No.", which never made sense to me because there's no O in "number" (Yeah, I know that it's for the Latin "numero".)

"Pound sign" bugs me because I know that the pound sign is £ and have known that since I was very young, even living in a country that doesn't use pounds for currency I only call it a sharp sign in music and in C# (even then, it's a slightly different symbol in musical notation).

Number sign. Didn't think it was called anything else.

Even on phones its the....oh wait...

....the pound sign/key.

I don't know what's real anymore.

I call it the "number sign", but "octothorpe" is an awesome term and I think I will start trying to use it in the future...

I say "pound", because it's funny to be able to pound the pound key.

Number sign... since it seems more correct than "pound" or "hash" sign... =D

Fun fact: in German, it's called the Raute, whose literal meaning is "rhombus"... yes it makes no sense, but everyone uses this word.

Better than Almohadilla (Cushion).

I just call it a random name. Including sink.

Number sign, although my tendency to learn weird English words means a number of the other options will still be understood by me.

Except octothorpe, I keep forgetting that one.

It's been pounded in my head to call it number sign, so I get temporarily confused when I have to do something with the "pound button".

Did I pound my self-respect to shrapnel with that pun? Maybe!

If it's being used in a phone context, I'll call it the pound sign. If not, usually the number sign.

Pound because... well... I dunno. Must have been taught it somewhere.

More Czech gibberish: it's called "křížek", which means.. "little cross". yes. *sigh*

When I first heard of the language I though it was called "C Number Sign"... (since in music the sharp sign is drawn a little differently from #) thankfully, I never had the occasion to actually use that pronunciation, since I don't use the language or anything...

I thought it was "C Number".

I also used to say stuff like #include as "number include"

Hash on phones and the # key on a keyboard, number if it precedes a number. It's never the pound sign for a very obvious reason.

I'm English. Pounds are currency.
