My ethernet (integrated, on a Gigabyte GA-945GZM-S2 motherboard) seems to be completely dead under Windows XP (not working at all, even after an uninstall / reinstall of its drivers)... yet when booted into Ubuntu, it works as if nothing has happened.

I'm at my wit's end (mostly due to my mother's whininess, I'll admit) at what to do. Does anyone have any more ideas that might work? I'd rather not have to reinstall and reupdate Windows to get things working, but if I absolutely have to... (that'd just mean reinstalling and updating ubuntu too, and ugh updates suck to download on both OSes)

(who wants to bet I'm missing something incredibly obvious in my panic?)

Have you tried different versions of the drivers if they are available? Maybe you need to update the bios, too. Here is the XP drivers download. And here is the BIOS update. You probably already know this, but I thought I'd post them anyway. They also list an Ethernet diagnostic utility that might help discover the problem, whatever it does.

As far as I can tell, there are no other versions of the driver, and the BIOS is at the most recent revision. (FI, had to update to get my Core 2 Duo working.)

Thanks for linking me to the diagnostic utility, by the way - I can't tell what exactly it does (aside from a few LAN tests), but apparently I can access things once I've started it up and closed it. A bit annoying, but it works. I'm still not sure what the issue is, though... (and to be honest, an XP reinstallation, aside from updating, isn't that huge a hassle... which I'm tempted to do as well since I'm paranoid other things might start breaking. I was just ridiculously irritated last night.)

Is it your own copy of XP or obtained through other means? And what SP are you running?

It's my own copy of XP, got it back when I built the machine. The installation CD will install SP2, but I do keep it up to date (SP3, now).

...I'm just worried about setting my audio recording again. That was a bitch and a half, last time.

e: rewording a bit

Issue resolved itself after the thing was unplugged for a while. Huh.

Wonky cable could've cause it, maybe... I've had some Ethernet cables go wonky after several years, so I had to replace them. =P

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a cable - I'm using the same one as usual, and the issue also persisted on another cable. It was solely a random hiccup on XP's part, as far as I know.

I built a computer which did this exact thing--in fact, it BSODded when I tried to install XP, and I had to use Ubuntu.

The motherboard turned out to be faulty in said computer, so watch out, Bloodstar.

This is actually a pretty common problem; usually removing power entirely from the PC for a short while fixes things. Sounds like it wouldn't work, but it does.

My messed up computer had power supply issues as well, so it makes sense to me.
