Do you usually text people on your mobile phone, if you have one?

I never do. I don't like having to type on just a 12-key keypad. And I'm a spelling and grammar stickler, so just abbreviating everything lk ths hi i lov u 2 4 ever is out of the question

If someone texts me, I've been known to respond in voice instead.

Not really, my phone sucks for text messages (it only has a numpad) and I refuse to abbreviate, leading to long messages when I do dare to text a full message.

Very rarely do I send one, and when I do, I use full proper grammar/punctuation. I only use them when I don't want to disturb them with a call. Most I've ever sent/received was 40 over the course of a single billing period when I was too shy to talk to my friend via phone.

And yes, I'll respond to text with a call if I'm not in a noisy area.

Very often, but not obsessively. I text my wife, my parents, and my brothers. Only when a phone call isn't required. Last month I used about 300 texts of my unlimited texting plan... I switched it to 1500 texts for $5 less per month.

I pretty much always use my phone for just its original purpose... talking to people over long-distances. No texting, no Internet, nothing like that...

Even before I had my iPhone, texting on the number pad quickly and with proper grammar was never really an issue I had...you just...get used to it. If anything the iPhone makes it HARDER because of how often my big fingers slip but yeah, to answer the question, I text. Often. Its very convenient when you don't need to o through the trouble of calling someone or they perhaps can't take a call. There's a lot of reasons really, but its a valuable tool.

I do text to Twitter though, but that's it.

I once had a phone with a Web browser, but it charged a lot of phone units to use it. Like, half a unit per minute or something similarly insane. Considering how much I briwse the Web, yeah, I'll just use my computer instead.

As far as I know, texting is extremely expensive. First of all you pay how long the message is, then you pay a connection fee, a service fee, another fee if you text to a phone outside the company you have, and maybe a region fee depending on where you are.

All in all, a text message may end up 10x (if not more) expensive then just making the call in the first place. Not to mention with a call you can get a response right away so you generally save 1-2 text messages, not to mention only one end have to pay this.

I'm not sure how it is worldwide, but this is how it is in Sweden. Basically: Companies charge a lot more for text messages then they should (hint: text messages are VERY cheap for them to send) simply due the fact that they can get away with it. :/

If I want something, I just call instead... or get home and use skype as I'm such a cheap bastard. :<

Yep. I text more than I actually call people. I don't like talking on the phone and texting is easier for me.

I rarely ever call, and I get unlimited texts and Internet everytime I top up £15 Also, having an iPhone means I have a keyboard, so that simplifies things. And, even when I'm using phones that don't, I never use txtspeek.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Text messaging is a horrible scam here in the US as well. I do instant message a lot, which I can do all I want on my phone for the cost of the internet data plan, which I use for a lot of other stuff as well. My phone has a proper keyboard with physical buttons that aren't too awfully small so it's real quick.

I text but not as much as the first year I had my phone
I probably send around 500 a month and receive about the same. My phone has a full keyboard, and I always type in full sentences and "nvr txtspk lk ths". I find that quite annoying when people do but what can you say. It's probably al lot harder to text without qwerty keyboard and I don't blame them for abbreviating.

Nope. I don't call anyone through the cell phone I have either. I just use it as a clock.

(Technically it isn't my cell phone, it's just there for whoever may be out of the house and would like to be able to call home.)

Gah. Never could get into AOL/IM/texting-speak (or wanted to). So any IMs or phone text-messages I send will never have any abbreviated words.

Not here... for us it's either a flat fee per text message, or a flat fee per bill. (In other words, unlimited monthly texting.)

I've got unlimited texts on my cellphone, which is nice.

Your phone might have a t9 mode, which is what mine had (and it makes typing on it a fuckload easier)

As for me, well... yeah. I have a blackberry with a (mostly) full keyboard. So... often enough.

I usually use AIM (yes, on my phone) though.

Mine has a t9 mode, but it seems kinda weird to me. Half the time it changes my words into something else entirely, and it takes almost as many keypresses as the hard way to make it work.
