So I'm a fan of all things gadgets. I love my iPhone and I like Android phones as well (but I went with the superior screen and apps).

Anyway, today is the Windows Phone 7 launch event. You can catch all the shenanigans at that link. Reading through the features and pictures, it looks like Microsoft has finally turned their super crappy windows mobile into something decent. But for me, its way too simplistic and plain. And I'm a simplistic kind of kind. I use Chrome, I keep as few windows open as I need and I prefer all my programs in a certain order on my task bar at work (still using Windows XP, can't rearrange them).

But this is way too simple. Their design goal is "Get in and get out". You can see that from this new commercial:

<object width="640" height="390"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/EHlN21ebeak&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></embed></object>

I'm sure lots of people will like this but I don't think its enough to overtake Android and especially iPhone as the leading mobile device OS. We'll see how it does this holiday season which is always a test of a product's weight in retail.

Unfortunately for Microsoft, as neat as these phones might be, there's likely going to only be a short spike in interest unless they can actually do what Google and Apple have done -- infuse a certain bit of culture into the OS, and encourage the manufacturers to do the same. Microsoft can only make itself relevant again by being appealing; brand awareness and bashing the competition isn't enough anymore. They need something big, and something that no one else has really done before, if they want WinMo 7 to really attract some attention. It has to be enticing on its own, and people have to be made to think that it's not just another rehash of 6 or 6.5.

If MS can't do that, then WinMo 7 is too little, too late. Marketing is nice, but on its own, it's not gonna work.

(plus well ... partnering with AT&T isn't going to make it more popular either)

Paulguy's Post configuration
From what I've read, they've been trying to imitate the other OSes by really removing anything preferable about windows mobile and replacing it with the things that other people don't like about the other OSes. Like, I guess multitasking is out the door, open SDK (Which even iphone has.) is supposedly going away, overall less "low-level" control (Unsurprising, the trend for all of those OSes, including android, is to try to hide what's going on in the background... I guess so the OS seems like this magical black box that does everything right... until it inevitably doesn't and you have to struggle to get any information out of it.).
