So I've been playing "Word with Friends" on my iPhone which is basically Scrabble but its free. Its really fun and one of my dad's favorite board games so we enjoy playing versus each other.

It got me thinking about playing board games with him and he also liked UpWords which is basically Scrabble but you can stack letters. He could never remember the name of the games so he called Scrabble "Spellem" and he called UpWords "Stackem". Oddly enough, when Scrabble purchased the game and made a new box for it, they used this as part of the logo.

Anyway, I'm working on an iPhone version of UpWords that I want to name "Stack'em Words". I'm learning Adobe Flash to program it since I don't have a Mac myself. I do have a friend with a MacBook though. I can compile it in Flash and then use their mac to download the SDK to convert it from flash to iOS.

Here is a preview.

I'll post my progress here as I continue working on the project. It may take some time since I have to relearn Flash but I hope to have it done within a maximum of 6 months.

Hmm. This just got me pondering - is it common/allowed by Apple's wacky rules for multiplayer iPhone and Android games to be compatible with eachother? I'ma get a Droid soon and it'd be nice to find some apps that can work with their iPhone counterparts.

I suppose a wrapper could actually run iPhone apps on Android (much like Wine runs Windows apps on Linux without actually being an emulator), but there'd be no legal way to buy them... free ones are probably fine at least.

Anyway not really on topic... Yours looks quite nice, although the gradient between tiles stands out. Are you going for a simple plain look or planning to add some wood textures and detail?

I'm not aware of any games yet, but I know that you can video call between an iPhone and an Android phone (such as my IP4 and my wife's EVO 4G).

For now I'm sticking with a simple theme thats easy to view and simple to use. Once I learn more, I'm going to make a 3D version that allows you to see the stacked letters instead of just a number representing the height. This is just a Photoshop rendering but its a start. I have to work out the buttons and main screen next but now I have my idea on paper... so to speak.

Edit: Looks like there are a few cross platform games. Good to know, if I can ever figure out how to code for an Android version...
