CAKE is a hack created by myself and I have been working on it for about a month. So far, Demo 1.00 has been made and you can download it here, and Demo 1.10 (Demo 1.00 with an added level, fixed up and newer overworld, redone titlescreen, new patches and cleaner coding, and various misc. new things) is on it's way as I am trying to work on this as much as I can.

Plot: Mario receives a familiar letter from Princess Peach inviting him to come over from some cake. When Mario reaches the castle he's in for a surprise to hear from Toadsworth that Peach and the cake were snatched away by Bowser. Toadsworth tells Mario that he's starving and all he can think about is that amazing chocolate cake Peach made so he send Mario out to go take back what is rightfully his!

This actually looks pretty good, graphically. I can't see any major palette issues on the levels, and the graphics themselves aren't that bad. One thing I do notice is that Toadworth's lines are a little clunky, especially "Please Mario!", I think a comma would work better in that situation. Also, instead of "maybe", "if you would" or even just the ellipsis would feel smoother as a way to close out that dialogue.

The Title screen looks interesting, however the ribbon and oval seem vary flat and undetailed compared to Mario, are they just WIP?

Lastly, on the overworld shot, the green grass mario is on is far, far too saturated compared to the rest of the colours on screen.

I added "CAKE" to the titlescreen and the letters change colors to the left (K is green then blue then red then yellow), but the ribbon might still some more shading.

I would recommend making the "CAKE" text much larger, filling as much space as possible. The oval around mario also needs more detail, even if it's just a simple repeating pattern of various powerups.

The difficulty fluctuated badly, the first two levels were average, the third one was very challenging but the following ones were all relatively easy (except maybe for the ghost house which was somewhat average). You should try to make your levels gradually get harder. The level design for the ice level was boring, there was really nothing interesting about it. You could try adding more variety to it (it seemed somewhat repetitive) I like the water level but it was very easy and short (especially considering it immediately followed the sky one (the third level) which was a lot harder)...

The graphics and music were very good, though. I didn't like the music for the second level but overall it was good. You should work a bit more on your level design, though. The ASM hacks were good and the story is somewhat original so I'm looking forward to seeing more updates.

Even though it was pretty much just a demo so I could get some of my work out there, the levels weren't ordered from easy to difficult like they should have been. Thank you, I'll make sure I do that for the next demo.

And yes, my level design does need improvement and I find it 100 times harder to make a good level compared to coding some ASM. There are plenty of tutorials to teach you about ASM but there aren't really any about how to make a good level. Just ones about what not to do when making a level.
