Do you generally think of the letter Y as a vowel or a consonant? It can function as either in an English word: a consonant in "yes" or "yard", a vowel in "myth" or "hairy", and some will say that the y's in words like "boy" and "may" are vowels, others consonants.

I actually usually think of Y as a vowel, despite the fact that I run Jul WOF, where Y is a consonant Maybe because I studied German.

Vowel, although I hate how some Wheel of Fortune contestants actually lose their turn if they try to buy a Y... but show rules, I guess =)

Yeah, I'm nicer than the real show on that, if someone picks a letter that was already selected or whatever, I'll usually let them pick another letter

Of course, I'm also not giving away real money.

I like to think of it as a little of both and neither at the same time. Its trying to become a vowel but at the same time it knows that it won't really ever accomplice that goal. It most likely feels left out because it's rejected by both its vowel and consonant peers. They're always picking on poor Y.

In my country Y is a vowel, so I think it is in english too.
The Y's that are used in "way" and "may" is more like how I pronounce J in my country.

Yes, I have a question. Is this a line or a line segment we're talking about here?

Consonant.

Funny how they'd teach us at school that the vowels were "A, E, I, O, U and sometimes Y" but never really explained what that SOMETIMES was.

I was always taught:
A O U (Å) E I Y (Ä Ö)

So I guess its natural.
