Basically, the bill would let the Justice Department take down any US based website down under the suspicion of piracy and/or file sharing.

And if the site is hosted anywhere else,
they can demand that the internet providers block it.

woo looks like fun

Sounds like one of those things that won't be enforced.

Again.

Hell it sounds like every other anti-piracy law: never getting anywhere.

My, but those copyright groups go through an awful lot of time, energy, and money to fail to stop piracy...

Paradoxially very concerned and very unconcerned.

Meh. I'll be concerned if it actually goes anywhere.

I'll be interested in seeing how internet piracy will make a workaround of such a thing if indeed this is enforced well.

Further anonymization, continued presence in countries which don't support the US version... multitude of ways, not to mention ISPs who overzealously enforce it lose customers and get horrible PR.

Comcast instantly springs to mind.

Well, time to start thinking of what Internet service to get when I finally move out.

Apparently the porn industry wants to stop pirates too.

I'd have some snarky comment here, but I can't think of anything except

Comcast can be a pain sometims. I got two email from them before I started using peerblock. The stupid part is they were Wii games that I hadn't planned on playing more than once or twice.

Anyone else think Comcast will eventually go bankrupt or get split by the FTC and/or FCC? I can picture that happening in a few years... same with AT&T (remember when the original AT&T split in 1984?) =D

Anyway, this bill probably won't get anywhere, as we will always find new ways to share files online. =)

Why does the article imply that they can take down sites worldwide? I find that terrible odd considering it's a law that may pass in the US. :/

Well, have it blocked within the USA.

I'm still surprised they haven't. But then that's true of a lot of companies. People just seem all too willing to give their money to any company at all.

Unfortunately, many people don't have much of a choice, especially if the company has a "legalized monopoly" in your area (like Comcast and Avista Utilities here). It's easy to trample all over your customers when there's no danger of your company being dethroned.

For what it's worth each web site in question would have to go through due process. That is something isn't it? With the way our legal system is designed it would take years for anything to come of it and by that time several more filesharing sites will have cropped up.

What you really have to worry about is the fact that the White House is going behind the bills back and asking internet providers to voluntarily shut down websites that have destructive content. They are hiding behind the false clause that it is only for suspicious pharmacy web sites but in time that will turn to file sharing as well. If that happens then there will be absolutely no due process for the websites in question.
