My girlfriend's computer hasn't been working right for the past couple of months... when I turned it on recently after being off for a couple of days, the power light kept blinking (I think it was some organized pattern, not sure) and I smelled smoke coming from it...

She doesn't want to lose anything from her computer, and what would be the best way to get the data off? Get an IDE enclosure and put the hard drive in it, getting as much data off of it as possible?

I'm thinking it's either the CPU, the PSU, or the motherboard in this case... any ideas? =/

Once the hard drive is out, check the motherboard for bad capacitors. If it looks okay, try the computer with just the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and power supply (and no keyboard or monitor). If it seems to work, add components one by one until you find the problem.

Smoke? The power supply is most likely to do that, followed by the CPU, followed by some cables catching on fire.
