Does the site not let you use CSS your layout because I tried using this code:

<style type="text/css">
.maxmain
{
padding: 30px;
background-image: url(http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/8254/advancedmatrixphp.gif)
background-repeat:repeat;
background-position:left bottom;
background-color:black;
height:auto !important;
text-shadow:1px 1px 5px black;
color:white;
font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;
}
.maxbox
{
background: url(http://alex.losego.com/images/50graytdbg.png)
border: 2px black solid;
width:100%;
padding: 3px;
min-height:100px;
height:auto !important;
}
.maxmain .quote .box {
background-color:gray;
border: 1 px solid;
}
.maxmain .boxhead {
padding:0px 15px;
}
.maxmain .code .box {
background-color:black;
}
.maxmain a:link {color: #F;}
.maxmain a:visited {color: #8F;}
.maxmain a:active {color: #8F;}
.maxmain a:hover {color: #B; text-decoration: underline;}
</style><div class="maxmain"><div class="maxbox">

</div></div>

and it didn't show up, but when I tried just plain html it seemed to work. It could be something in my code but I may just not be understanding stuff as I am new.

Remove the linebreaks for now; the code (last I checked) added <br /> tags in place of them, breaking CSS.

Yea, I've had similar problems with my layouts when I copy them verbatim from my hard drive, since I tend to add <br> in... and I have to convert it to a return keypress. =P

I actually like layouts better than plaintext signatures... more creativity that way. I've seen people with plaintext sigs that are like half a screen to a full screen tall (not here, at other boards)

Edit: forgot to use &lt;

One of these days I'll add the linebreak sanity check to <style> too

Those are not valid color identifiers. If you meant to use different shades of gray, then those should be #fff, #8f8f8f, and #bbb.

Also, watch out for styling something with the same name as the site itself, or breaking tables. Both are likely to become a nuisance if you do them.

How is it over flowing (I believe you but I just don't see it?).
