So I have some shitty ATI onboard (Radeon HD 3200) and for some reason it never, ever works 100% right.

Case in point, I recently updated the driver, and now LOVE2D (openGL application) stutters constantly and never reaches a steady 60FPS, while it did before, and yet many other 3D applications work better than before. What the hell gives?

This is annoying as all fuck. D:

Downgrade the drivers, some versions of ATI's drivers just suck, and they are bugged.

Pretty much the only reason I like to stick with Nvidia nowadays, I could care less about which one has better hardware but since the Omega drivers aren't an option anymore I just pretty much just won't use Radeon.

I've never had any problems with their drivers, so long as the card in question is relatively new. Once you've had it for a couple of years and ATI has stopped caring about it, though, all bets are off.

ATI has good cards/drivers, but with certain models/occasional releases the drop the ball.

Hmm, couple of suggestions:

1) Check the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\OpenGLDrivers\ati2dvag

Does it contain "atioglxx.dll" or "atioglx2.dll"? It's supposed to be the former, but apparently some Catalyst packages don't update this key properly. I had to fix this in order to get Minecraft running on my laptop.

2) If you know what Catalyst version you were using previously, you can try extracting the two aforementioned files from the older package and stick them in the LOVE2D application folder.

Aside from that, I dunno. Did the new driver perhaps enable VSync/triple buffering? That would cause stuttering if the video hardware can't keep up.

ATI's drivers are always a crapshoot. The version I was using previously on my laptop (9.8?) had some weird bugs in the 2D driver, causing certain dialogs in Paint Shop Pro 4 to crash (?!) and Addiction Pinball to quit to the desktop if you didn't start the game fast enough. It's a good thing Toshiba keeps their official drivers up to date! Ha ha ha ha...ha...
