Mine faces out of the screen.

I remember reading somewhere that right-facing avatars tend to be ideal as they look at the adjacent post, but I take whatever I can get.

Towards the screen, and could be rotated in pretty much any way you want, assuming the light source is coning from that way. Most GUIs assume a light source from the top-left, so I did the lighting from the top left to make it consistent with that.

Mine's rather 2D... so I guess towards the screen is most accurate for me.
