Paulguy's Post configuration Yeah, like the article said, chips with stuff locked out are normally that way because the batch failed testing. This is taking chips that passed testing being locked. The point is that they're still profiting from the chips at this lower price, because they're still spending as much on making the chips, since the features are there already, so the "upgrade" is just extra profit. Certainly businessy, but pretty under-handed. ____________________ |

EDIT: Of course, I might be overreacting. Intel is saving money if they simply disable features and sell at a lower price, instead of having to make too many different chips. It's quite possible that might reflect on prices. |

09-23-10 05:59:49 PM Post #3654 There's a big difference between taking a 4-core chip with one faulty core, disabling that and selling it as a 3-core, and taking a working 4-core chip and charging extra to enable all cores. (Which isn't exactly what they're doing, but similar.) The general idea of paying extra to be able to use something you already own is pretty shady.
Trying to argue it as "buying an upgrade" doesn't really make sense. Unless they're selling at a loss and trying to make it up with these upgrades (which I highly doubt), they clearly can afford to sell the chips at this price - they cost the same to make whether their full capacity is used or not - so they could just sell them at that price without any unlocking nonsense. It's not costing them any more to let you use all the circuits in the damn thing, so charging for that seems pretty hard to justify. It is common in the consumer electronics market to have different models at different prices which are physically identical and only have different software, but that's still not quite the same. The better software would have cost them more to make, so the extra cost is like buying a software upgrade. Here, it's only flipping a bit to enable something that's there whether you use it or not.
