Daily Cycle II ~ 3051
For the past several years, I've had a digital alarm clock in my room. Nothing special, really, just... it kept time. Quite well, actually, as it kept time pretty good, minus a minute every few months or so.

But lately something is wrong.

A few days ago, it was magically 20 minutes ahead. No reason or anything, just suddenly there it was (I look at it often enough to notice when it's unexpectedly fast, since I ues it with my laptop to keep track of time).

I looked at it this morning. It still felt good, 20 minutes fast.

This afternoon, something wasn't quite right. I actually looked at it now, and checked...

...now it's 57 minutes fast.

There's a lot of history behind this old thing, though, so it's got me kind of worried. It seems to be running fast thogh (it's about half a second ahead of when I first started this post), and I don't know if I can fix it

That's rather strange. I could see a normal clock doing that but a digital one? You may want to check that out...

Drag's Post #237
I have an old digital clock from 1994 that I still use, it keeps time just fine. However, it does use a battery backup for when it loses power, but when it regains power, the time always is way ahead of what it should be. The only real use for the battery is so my alarm time doesn't get erased.

I'd say, unless there's some kind of interference that messes with it, you might need a new clock. Might.

It's now two full hours ahead. (15:37 versus 13:37)

I think it might be because of too much power draw from that particular outlet, due to having the other computer hooked up... I'm going to turn it off soon

The clock I have now tends to get ahead by a few minutes over time. It's nice, save for the fact that there isn't any battery in it. So after a power outage, it needs to be reset.

I don't think I've ever had a digital clock run too fast or slow, but I once had one that just went crazy. Instead of keeping time, it just lit up random parts of the display.

Now it's 2:05 fast...

It's speeding up, I guess. How long until it starts visibly going insane?

Did it run on batteries? I know that a lack of battery power can do stuff like that... the 7-segment decoder doesn't have enough juice to correctly operate.

No, but come to think of it it must have been right around then we discovered the house had some kind of wiring problem that later started making all manner of appliances malfunction (clocks wouldn't actually count or only the colon would light up, etc).

talking about haunted alarm clocks...

mine randomly decides to shut off the alarm function, and I've almost been late to school several times because of it. And at least once, it stayed on, but didnt go off on time.

sometimes it decides to completely change the alarm time I set it to. Say I set it to 6:35 AM, it will change to something like 3:28 PM when I wake up late to find it didn't go off.

very annoying...

I just unplugged it.

I just hope I didn't end up breaking it in the process.

Older alarm clocks that plug into the AC outlet relied on the 60HZ current phase to keep time. These can't really go faster or slower, unless your local power plant has some very serious problems.

But more recent AC clocks will instead rely on an internal Quartz crystal to keep time. It's possible that the Quartz crystal or its soldering becomes flaky and has some random glitches.

When I was younger, we had a microwave oven that suddenly became haunted. At totally random times (including the middle of the night), it would go "beeeeeeeeeeep" without stopping, turn itself on, start cooking and its screen would be all lighted up (8888888888. Pretty scary!!

We had to keep it unplugged when it was not in use.

I decided to repair it myself. Did you know that many microwave ovens include an envelope inside with some tips, plans and warnings on how to repair them?

Anyway I suspected the Quartz crystal to be at fault. What I did is simply redo the soldering for the crystal, and it fixed the problem!

That reminds me of a portable clock thing I used to have, that would freak out and do basically the same as your microwave (sans the cooking ). I also had a cheap handheld game that did that once; when I turned it on, it lit up every segment of the display and just kept playing a sound effect over and over. I figure it might have got into a test mode somehow.

Also, the relying on 60hz thing has the fun side effect that if you take one to Europe, it'll run too slow, and if you take one from there to North America, it'll run fast.

How recent is "recent"? This thing is several (10+) years old.
