It is kind of a weird word. It seems unintuitive to me that the e and r switch when the -y suffix is added.

It makes sense when it comes to pronunciation, though. When you see "firey", you think "fire-ee" and pronounce it that way. But if you didn't know the word or its meaning, you'd read it as "fi-ree".

Yeah, I saw it before but figured someone else would mention it. Then they didn't... so it fell upon me to do it, after being ill, tired, and distracted.

..That, and the IRC logs I correct for my IRC RP have that misspelling in them all the time. Most of them being done by me, too.
