I'm 24, got married when I was 20. Her father had to be there to get our marriage certificate and give a sworn statement that he gave his permission. I had asked him first anyway before proposing on Christmas Eve 2006.

We had been friends for going on a year and had been dating for about 8 months of that before I ask her dad. She actually graduated high school early when she was 16. You could say it was an arranged marriage, her parents talked to my brother's in-laws who was the pastor of our church who talked to my parents about taking her to prom. I didn't go to mine in high school and she wasn't planning on going with anyone so they hooked us up and things took off after that.

Those were my thoughts too. No way would my dad be likely to agree to my lifestyle enough to approve a partner for me. Parental consent is only required if 1 person is under 18, right? Of course, domestic partnerships might work differently from opposite-sex marriages, but they'd probably be even less likely to reequire the parental OK considering how many parents are homophobic.

I had a girlfriend for a while in 2007, then we messily broke up after some shit from my disapproving dad and whatnot.

If you really want old school, we didn't technically date. We had dates as they're called now but 2/3 of the time they were with other people as well. Most would call it courting. We had some time alone together to do things but it was almost all during the day on weekends. Hanging out together was at her house or my house with either parents home. Thats just what we chose to do and it worked out great. After being married for 3 years now, a lot of that simple stuff seems silly now but it was good for a healthy relationship.
