So basically this is what Autodesk did: someone already paid their AutoCAD $3500 license fee, just to use it, and just because they are done with it, or never used it, they have to charge someone else the fee again?

"The licensee changed," is Autodesk's argument. "This other person did not pay for a license to use our software."

So you're a multi-million dollar company and you're wasting how much time and money on litigation to stop this person?

Anyway I can see companies like GameStop not being happy and opposing this but ... all hail the almighty copyright. It seems that lately, even human livelihoods (or lives) pale in importance to the ©.

So, yeah, don't exactly get too hopeful.


As for this, it's bullshit. It's just more of this "You don't own it, you just license" it technical bullshit. Imagine this applied to cars; you've just been licensed it, but you can't actually sell it or really do anything since the property isn't yours, it's just leased out to you.

(This already exists as leases, obviously, but imagine if that could be expanded to be everything. And it very well can.)

On second though, this is doubly dangerous. Just imagine 10 or so years from now when someone has an old, possibly rare game they want to sell ... and some shell of the company that produced it sees this person and sues.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the outrageous fines and judgments in these cases (often thousands upon thousands more than it would be for outright theft) to rake in money without actually producing anything.


Worst case scenario, of course, but it's just the kind of crap that these rulings are allowing.

I'll remain cautiously optimistic. For the time being, I'll continue to build up my NES collection and when it comes time to do something, I'll help out with pointing out all the logic fail.

I can see the reason why they wanna stop used games going out of more recent games, but of classic stuff, well, it's a little ridiculous.
