That was the case with PSP; they figured out how to get the bootROM to run their code in recovery mode, and Sony could do nothing but ship new units with a modified ROM. While I'm sure the PS3 has a similar recovery ROM, you'd think they'd do a damn thorough inspection of it before release this time. My guess is the exploit lies further up, in a kernel driver.

Because jailbreaking is now legal in the US?

Because its the popular term now. Jailbreaking referred to the iPhone, rooting is for Android phones, and for consoles its typically called homebrew or still just hacking/modding. They're going with the popular term that everyone knows now after all the iPhone hype.

While it may be legal to apply this mod to your PS3, playing games through it that you did not pay for is still illegal, such as roms and iso's.

It's pretty... telling that most people seem to be chomping at the bit to go and pirate stuff instead of making emulators or whatever, though.

Well this chip just came out with piracy functions built in. For homebrew, people will probably just want to find a way to get Linux working without the usual restrictions - and then they need to write drivers to use the now-accessible hardware. So it'll take a little longer.

Isn't that pretty much always the case?

Personally I'd be quite interested if someone could get Linux working on the PS3 Slim. I'd be all over that, especially if it had fully unlocked access to the hardware.

Some updates for yall.

The Federal Court ruled the PSJailbreak itself be banned in Australia. Failure on their part due to previous cases, but whatever. It doesn't stop the multiple open source projects that have popped up.

As you knew, the open source PSGroove option disabled backup manager interaction. It has already been hacked and fixed. Duh. Also, PSFreedom has also popped up but has been in development longer than these, and it only requires a N900 phone. That's right, you put the linux tars on it, SSH and turn the PS3 on specially (power then eject fast) and ding, you've got devmode!

Sony is trying to pursue bannination in America as well, which maybe the DMCA will protect but who knows at this point. Regardless, the myriad of options are already popping up, and there is no stopping it.

Edit: The "blocking" feature of PSGroove was just an ID block of the backup manager. :specialed:

Edit 2: Also, the code was determined to not be stolen from Sony at all. It's a 99.9% original exploit abusing a cloned 6 port usb hub with a large descriptor tag. The 00.1% happens to be that the ID it uses is the official Sony jigstick ID.

Wasn't this a US ruling or was there something similar in Australia?

Another update, there may be a patch already with the latest update from Sony.

It is confirmed that the patch fixes the exploit, but not too many have really tested it. It's been said that if the PS3 boots with the dongle in and doesn't crash then it has been closed completely.

So much for the whole "future-proof"-ness of this exploit kind of not working. Haha.

Ah well. I'll hold off on updating until I hear that it's possible to play PS2 games with little effort, or run Linux on Slims. Even better if they somehow have a way to do it without getting PSN-banned.

I'm not really plugging in my PS3 either way for a while, so it doesn't matter too much.

I'll give Sony credit for patching the hole ASAP. Certainly did a faster job than Nintendo, although they tend to wait and then swing a giant mallet towards homebrew-enabled systems, crippling those who chose to upgrade for a period of time (until the next exploit is released).

Granted, if by the end of the week there's a workaround... not such a great job.

Well, a general purpose framework for a programmable USB dongle is already pretty good. We'll just have to see what they did to fix it, if it was just some silly, ineffective hack-job (Nintendo) or if they actually fixed the driver that handles hubs.

Sony usually fixes it right the first time, but there's always another hole. Especially now that people have wormed their way into the innards and have more of a reason to look for holes.

I'd have been floored if they didn't fix this right away. The "future-proof" aspect for sure would be the "update blocker" ability, not some unpatchable exploit. (Of course, that has happened on PSP... and I was floored. ) Now that people are in, they'll begin to find all the other bugs.

It did seem like a lot of the later updates weren't much special, though, from what I can recall. Not all, but a fair chunk. (really, really minor changes that wouldn't warrant an update anyway, at least) I'll admit, I never kept up with too much other than homebrew releases most of the time on the PSP, and since my original battery went south I haven't even kept up with that.

There's absolutely no arguing the early updates added a lot of stuff, though... most of it quite useful (or otherwise interesting, e.g. music playback visualizations), too. I wish we could get those kinds of updates back.
