Now, as everyone should know, I'm a total retrogamer. While I mainly collect for the NES, a certain little previous console is still a fun one to play, in my opinion. The thread on the Atari Halo game got me thinking.

What games do you like for the Atari? Why so? I'm curious. I don't think we talk this retro enough.

Three games always stand out for me in particular. Adventure, because I enjoy how there were multiple screens and stuff to pick up, Berzerk because of the maze factor, and Pitfall because of the platformer thing of the old times.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Yeah, I like Berzerk. It's pretty fun and has decent gameplay compared to the majority of the games at the time.

Enduro is pretty decent too, as an early racing game. I even made a loose clone of it, once.

Pitfall series. Pitfall 1 is a pretty good platformer, having multiple screens and challenges but certainly can get boring after a bit. Pitfall 2 is pretty cool for being a rather deep platformer for the day, but it has a few issues. I always had a hard time getting the guy to jump the way I wanted. I probably like the first one better just because I found it more playable. It also has a neat little tune that changes based on how well you're doing. Probably or one of the very earliest to do that, and probably the only game to do that on the Atari 2600.

That's all I can recall for now, I haven't played many Atari games in a while.

I used to love Berzerk, Missile Command, Defender (yes, Defender), and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back on our old 2600. Also River Raid, but we didn't have it. My uncle did, though.

I even kind of liked 2600 Pac-Man Not 2600 E.T., though.

I didn't mind E.T. after I figured out just what the hell was going on. Not that it still doesn't suck horribly, but it kind of made it into my "sucks less" category.

I hate falling into the pits. Oh my God, do I hate it still for that.

As probably guessed, the two Turrican games are amongst my favorites, as well as Wings of Death and Lethal Xcess. Leavin' Teramis is pretty fun too, and part of it's... kinda become a personal meme between a few people.

...Alright, so those are Atari ST games. Still an Atari system.

Yars Revenge, Turmoil (basically linear Tempest), Berzerk, Ms. Pac-Man...

However, I knew the ColecoVision better than the Atari 2600, and had Donkey Kong and Turbo, among other games, for it =P

I actualyl got a 2600 for my birthday, but I've yet to actually play with it, because I can't get it to work.

I'm thinking that it's some strange connection issue I can't quite solve in the front room TV, so once I actually GET AROUND TO IT, I'll try seeing what hooking up the system to my bedroom TV does.

Once I clear up the 5 other systems I have on my desk, that is. Seriously, my desk is pretty crowded and every little electronic thing has to compete for space. Case in point: My N64 is on top of my Playstation, and there are wires all over the front of my VCR.

I've only dabbled with various 2600 games but I played River Raid quite a bit.

Mainly because one of my aunts had a 2600 in her house with River Raid plugged in.

And I could never find where the other games were hiding. If there were other games.

Yar's Revenge! Geez, how could I forget that one? That's embarrassing, damn.

I remember fun times with an obscure game called Squeeze Box as well. And Turmoil! Turmoil is a fucking awesome game as well.

Does anyone know why games fry? Like, what's happening in the system to make it fry?

Too bad I can't try it on emulators, AFAIK.

I know one emulator does it, but I can't remember for the life of me what it was. It was one of the better-end Atari emus that I downloaded on Zophar one time, if that narrows it down.

I don't know much about the Atari, what are you guys talking about? Frying the system?

The only Atari games I ever got into was Pitfall and some game where you're like underwater and exploring caves.. or maybe you were in space.

Frying can be done by holding the power or reset switch in the middle (forgot which) and it can alter the gameplay. Stella emulates this by pseudorandomly changing bytes in the emulated RAM, AFAIK =P

Probably a horrid guess on my part, but... H.E.R.O.? That's a good game actually.

H.E.R.O. isn't bad either. I actually found a ROM of it recently for the Sega Master System. I had no idea it was ported to that until I downloaded it.
