Who would you say is your favourite video game character ever, and why?
You can probably guess who mine is *looks at her username, post layout, and avatar* I think Terra is the best FF6 character. She's cute, powerful, useful, and has a nice personality I identified with her pretty much immediately when I first played FF6.
I identify with her so well that, even though I've played series like Mario and Zelda for much longer, Terra is still my favourite character ever
Female Revan (KotoR series) - Hard to say why but it's mainly because of what she goes through.
Female Shepard (Mass Effect series) - Same as above.
Female noble royal (Dragon Age Origins) - I love this Origin story in DA, the best one IMO. And then the journey along the way.
The three above are from games where you can create your own character and the actions that ytou do affect the story.
Yuna & Tidus (FFX) - Same as above. You know, I can't say my reasons because I don't want to give things away. I just love how Yuna grows through the story and the support that Tidus gives her.
I'd say that the AI, Durandal, from the Marathon Trilogy is my personal favorite character created exclusively for a game.
Durandal is nearly impossible to explain adequately in brief terms to anybody who hasn't played the games, and I know that pretty much none of you have. If you're still curious, though, here's pretty much everything you did and didn't want to know about him.
If you don't want to read all of that, though, I guess I can say that he's an incredibly snarky AI who only presents himself in what he says, and he spends the trilogy ordering you around and generally causing trouble while (occasionally) simultaneously helping you and the other humans around. That explanation only scratches the surface, though, so, once again, if you're interested in learning more, check out those links.
Or, y'know, play the games. They're free and they're pretty good, after all.

I don't know if I have a top favorite, but I liked Bebedora in Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits. I haven't played that game for several years, though.
I don't usually have much of a favourite when speaking about video game characters.
But I would say that these apply for me, kinda:
Link - I have really been a huge LoZ fan ever since I played alttp, I'm not sure exactly why I like him as he does not really have much of a personality.
Sonic - Some people may find this very odd, and might ask me if it's modern or old school sonic that I like. But honestly, the character have not really changed that much over time. I reason I love him is not due to the games though, but rather due to SatAM being fucking awesome.
Aile - (megaman ZX) I'm not sure exactly what it is that makes me like her so much, but I do know that with biometal she gets fucking awesome! 8D
Not to mention I have been trying to make my hair look like zero's/model Z/etc. ^.^;
Well, then ... I'd have to choose the Chosen One (the player character) from Fallout 2. Talk about a sandbox RPG where you can do anything you want ... since you have control over all his skill development and his choices, you could have a brave gunman fighting to free people from the tyrranical Enclave, or you could just be a douche who uses targeted attacks to hit little kids in the groin with a sledgehammer and kills the populations of entire towns, or steals everyone's stuff. Plus you can even run a stupid character who can only communicate in grunts or onomatopoeia, which is also pretty fun.

Yeah Ikachan is awesome!
Also I don't know. I'd say I don't have a favorite...
Possibly Madotsuki is the one I've found myself most identified with.
Oersted is an amazing protagonist, that's for sure. Though Cube, the three innheritors and maybe Akira have it rough.
However on a more brighter contrast, I love Kirby's cheerful yet chaotic character. It says "of all time", and considering Kirby is one I've known the longest, I guess he'd be.
Then there's also Reimu and other Touhou characters... but eh.
I don't really have much of a favorite... but if I had to pick, I'd probably say King Dedede.
He's so cool!

I don't really have a favorite, and in some cases it depends on the game. Actually, I think I gotta put bowser on the list. I still prefer mario games over anything, and bowser hasn't really degraded over time. Mario's too bland, the princess turned into a retard, and Nintendo fucked Luigi over. Now I still like Luigi, and I guess he's still one of my favorites, nut I just hate how Nintendo goes so overboard with making him a wuss now. I want to see Luigi kick some ass!
As far as Sonic games go, I guess Shadow is my favorite character. Sonic is ok too, but in the later games his constant perky attitude can get on your nerves, and I love how Shadow basically says what the audience's actual reaction would be to Sonic's optimism. I also like Espio, but he's barely used. Knuckles is cool in the classic games, but he's pointless in the newer ones, and tails has pretty much always been an annoying freak that's more trouble than he's worth. Its cool to fly as him in Sonic 3, but in every other game I want to punch his face in.
Then I guess there are a few game specific characters like Kazooie, Mallow (yes I'm one of the 2 people who actually like Mallow) and Geno. So in summary, I guess Bowser, Luigi, Shadow, Sonic, Espio, Kazooie, Mallow, and Geno.

Let's see, might as well get around to answering this...
I've been a huge MetaKnight fan since Kirby's Adventure on the NES and I'm not really sure why. I like his lines in Kirby Super Star so maybe that has something to do with it? (Thank you, guys.)
Aside from that I seem to really like characters who overcome obstacles with brute strength. I think this is because I admire the traits I don't have, like strength and the willingness to use it if I had it. It's like how the progamers I like best are just really technically competent, even though I base my own play on mind games.
For example, Knuckles. He is your main man. Get ready to go in space.
Bowser is basically awesome. Like the moon over the day. He will set it on fire, smash it, and rip it apart far before anyone even started to tell him what it was and why he should have left it alone. But that's fine, because he's functionally invincible, so he'll just withstand the full force of whatever bad happens straight to his face, shrug it off, and set it on fire again.
I like the power of Ganondorf as a villain but mostly only in Ocarina of Time. The presentation of the world in that game made it very clear just how much damage he caused, and he gets some solid screen time as a tricky and strong evil bastard, unlike his appearances in the rest of the series. Also his indomitable will to victory is stronger than death itself.
The greatest of all time is probably Locke of FF6 fame though. He is cheerful and competent. He follows through on his promises and takes other people seriously. I don't know what else you need to be the best.
EDIT: I stayed up all night and have no recollection of writing this post. If you'd like, you could read it to yourself in the most exhausted voice you can manage for an idea of what must have been going on in my head.
I think its pretty obvious... Cidolfus Orlandu from Final Fantasy Tactics. He is a game changer. Seriously. If you can't finish the game easily after Orlandu joins your party, you should stop playing video games. He is a 1 man army. Literally. I played a few rounds in a certain run through of FFT with just him, nothing could touch him.
Definition: 'Love' is making a shot to the knees of a target 120 kilometers away using an Aratech sniper rifle with a tri-light scope... Love is knowing your target, putting them in your targeting reticule, and together, achieving a singular purpose against statistically long odds.

If you read the books to see his added personality, then you might agree: John-117, the Master Chief. He's an amazing character, with outstanding characteristics.
Ork: Hehehe, I never got that joke until now Seriously, I played through the game and never caught the underhanded joke. God, I love Garrus.

Oh yes.
For me, it's either Mega Man (despite not growing up with him, but picked up when I was about 13 or so via Anniversary Collection) or The Boss. Mainly because both are pretty good at kicking and chewing
