Development consoles.

It's hardcore expensive, but this gen has pretty much phased it out entirely. Everything has dev commands, everything has recovery functions through software, and they keep leading to holes. Go back to having hardware for your development and recovery stuff, it'll cost you a ton but if you're smart it will save you from the hackers for a while. And probably stop shovelware in the process.

Also, stop letting assholes leak your SDKs. They shouldn't even be bootable without a dev console parallel ported to your PC. Seriously.

lol...

The problem (like you're saying) is that it's VERY expensive. VERY VERY expensive.
There are game studios that can afford for some licenses to sdk's and emulators, but they probably can't afford one expensive console per computer...
Seriously, I dont think it's possible for Nintendo (for example) send a deveiopment Wii to every single person tht is going to participate in making a wii game?

Also, if you manufacture and sell so many development consoles, some WILL get leaked (physically)

They're usually licensed, so they need to be returned once they're done with it.

It won't stop shovelware unless they're required for any development on a console.

And requiring that would likely lead to other issues - new developers with new ideas may not have the money to sink into a development console along with all the other expenses of making a game.

"For a while"

The PS3 was safe from hax0rz for about 4 years. I really don't think you'd get much better.

And not having development functions really doesn't mean a whole lot (hello GBA)

I get the feeling between Linux support and general expense, there weren't really many people interested in PS3 hacking. They got rid of Linux and suddenly someone came up with an exploit pretty quick.

False.

Which is kind of a necessity, and if they're smart, these are just as secure as everything else

and they keep leading to holes.
There will always be a hole. PSP and PS3 are the only consoles I know of where the holes had anything to do with development/recovery tools.
The big difference between today's and yesterday's machines isn't built-in backdoors, it's that they have operating systems and non-proprietary connectors (USB, SD, Ethernet) and disc drives that can read ordinary DVDs (even if they're normally prevented from doing so by software).

Also, stop letting assholes leak your SDKs. They shouldn't even be bootable without a dev console parallel ported to your PC. Seriously.
I'm sure small companies with more coders than devkits will love that.

Sony demonstrated how to slow down piracy: provide a sandbox to run homebrew in, thus removing the necessity to enable piracy when you really just want homebrew. The problem is they crippled and ultimately removed the feature.

I'm not so sure, especially given that the beginnings of this exploit kind of came up before they removed Linux support. Hell, it was actually the Linux support that let them find it in the first place.

Indeed it doesn't. Besides, compared to other stuff from this gen, it's quite hard to use.

Especially compared to the Wii, which has to be the easiest console in existance to run homebrew on (except maybe the Dreamcast).

Legit dev 360s are on chinese ebay, probably black market. They get sent off to get melted but they don't. All you would need to do is get the back ports replaced (they smash them so they're unusable)

How so? The Wii had DVD debug commands that allowed chipless burnt backups. Sony has done it with the PSP/PS3. I'm not too keen on the 360 however.
