Have you ever gone camping?

We used to do it a lot, usually twice a year, when I was a kid and then a teen. I thought that it was fun at first, but I got rather bored with going to the same places in rural Michigan over and over again. When I was a teenager, I tended to spend camping trips largely reading, playing on the GBA, and wondering what was going on online.

We had a tent for a while, then got a bigger tent, then a pop-up RV, which my parents tended to use as justification for having a van. pick-up, or SUV instead of a car.

I'm actually going camping tomorrow with the tech and programming community from Sheffield, it's a bi-annual event called Geeks in the Peaks.

I went to the last one (some of the photos may not be public).

I went camping when I was in Girl Scouts, when I was younger.

I never really roughed it like you should when properly camping. We would stay in our tent in the back yard when we were kids. I do remember one time we stayed somewhere near a swimming hole overnight, too.

Other than that, my brother's and I have camped out a time or two at a campgrounds near Red Rock Canyon. And as a family with 2 other families, we stayed overnight on Memorial Day weekend out at the Valley of Fire (about an hour from Las Vegas). That was fun except for during the day it was over 100 degrees. Luckily we had super soaker water guns and there was plenty of water via a well that was set up near the campgrounds.

I'm certainly a fan of the "camping with a car" rather than "camping with a backpack". Taking things like a portaloo and a tent big enough that you can stand in make a huge difference, something I've noticed even with limited experience of camping.

I think camping will probably just remain something I'll do for Geeks in the Peaks. I'm going to think about renting a camper-van for Formula One Grand Prixs and visiting Le Mans for the 24 Hours.

I'm gone tent camping and cross country skiing in January! It snowed a whole lot then too. That was a lot of fun.

I used to do a lot of camping when I was in Boy Scouts, but not so much anymore.

I've done it a few times, but I'm usually not one to be up for roughing it in the woods. I like civilization more.

Yep, I do too. I got sick of taking zillions of camping trips in rural Michigan when we lived in rural Michigan also. Sorry, parents, I'm not the redneck wannabes that you are. I like cities.

I should say that we have a camp out in the woods here. It's not like pitching a tent and roughing it, it's more like a little house out by the lake that we go to seasonally. Up in Maine, it's fairly common for families to have camps as well as their own houses. From what my grandparents have told me, it's not really all that much more expensive, I guess. Unless you're just getting one nowadays. I dunno, it's been a while since I've asked about it.

Hooo boy, did I ever go camping.

I have miles of pictures too, but they're only coming out when I feel safe with putting pictures of myself online. Which may be never, because I'm a crotchety old 'everything is secret' guy from 2000.

In any case, I went through 11 states, camped in deserts, mountains, yellowstone, forests, wherever. Even slept on an Indian burial ground once. Contrary to all the rumors, they are not places where wrathful spirits attack you. :p

So yeah. Drove over 4000 miles, then 2000 on another trip, then 2000 to another. Went to Wounded Knee, Yellowstone, the badlands, Mormon farms in Utah (and that part of Utah that looks like Mars), Flagstaff, Denver Colorado, Dinosaur New Mexico (where the crunched visitor's center on the cliff is), etc.

Unlike the normal camper I use an old school tent and, unlike normal people, I use a 20+ year old camera with slide film to take pictures, so I was kind of an apparition.
