Alright, so...

http://videogames.yahoo.com/events/plugged-in/microsoft-raising-xbox-live-membership-prices/1409254

Yeah, I'm probably the last person in the known Gamerverse to hear about this, but still, a price hike? Is this really necessary?

Looks like I'll be doing all my online play through the PS3 that's here from now on. >>;

Up 10bux per year, also known as about a dollar a month for year-long subscripts (more for less time, obviously).

Kind of stupid, especially when you consider they've been clogging up the dashboard with video ads.

And they try to reverse it on us by saying "Well you asked for more features!"

Yeah, I smell a little bullshit there.

Price increases are weird though... Canada's monthly rate goes up by $1 but the yearly rate stays the same; we were already paying $59/year, I think. Brings them in line.

Here's my little rant on this $10 price increase.

All of the automatically-renewing subscription goers are in for a surprise.

IIRC they even cut online server support for older games, no?

So to me it really makes no sense raising the price tag. :/

Just another reason why I'm a PS3 guy... Sorry, I had to

I don't quite get the rate hike, either. It seems like someone at Microsoft just thought one day, "Hmm, what can we get away with to bring in more cash? Lets slightly raise the XBL fees! Nobody will quit over $10 year!"

And I like the new design at thegamefanatics, Anya. Tell your webmasters it looks really good.

Well however they can get rich. I honestly see a lot of gamers who just don't give a fuck about their money and will throw out cash for anything even if it's ungodly expensive, and there's enough of these people where the trend won't die down anytime soon.

The server costs should be getting cheaper. However, they decide to add in the avatar things (and they'd probably have the gall to tell me that I wanted it when I didn't. I just wanted the ability to upload my own avatar pic for my gamer profile, thank you), and the video stuff that Xkeeper was talking about, and all the useless shit we don't need.

I'll probably just play on the PS3 a while until I have to give it up to the fella that really owns it. Then I'll be kinda screwed. =/

...that all depends on the fucking game developer that has to run servers for their games, not Microsoft.

And really, you are all miffed about a $10 increase for a yearly subscription?

It wouldn't be anything worth getting frustrated with if it wasn't for the fact it came off as basically a total money grab. Especially after video advertising.

It just sounds like double dipping.

You guys know that the price of XBL is the same everywhere else but in America. Now that they raised the price by $10 a year, USA is now at the same price as Canada, Mexico, UK....

Also, we have ESPN and Hulu Plus coming soon.

The ads are annoying but I do the same thing most other gamers do, skip and ignore them.

I still like XBL over PsN and I used to be a Sony/Ps2 fangirl and anti-Xbox (thought it was a paper weight).

If you're PO'ed about the increase, go out and buy some 12 month subscription cards. Check out sales on Amazon, New Egg and even Microsoft is promoting and running sales on XBL. Or just don't use XBL gold.

Citation? I'd like to see the numbers on increasing server load with more people getting 360s and more games and downloads needing to be hosted.

To defend it seems like blind fanboyism. Like defending Sony for removing OtherOS support, and Nintendo for having completely-fucking-pathetic online service and a 500MB "harddrive."

What the hell.

Besides, what evidence? The only decreasing costs they might have is hardware cost. That is all. Putting servers online should actually get more expensive. You've got staff to pay (and these guys WILL ask for a raise). They have tons of stuff on XBLive. Also, bleh.

Note that I still don't like having to pay to play ANY Xbox games online.

As for the other part of your post: you sound incredibly ignorant there. Or just plain biased to death. How is the simple act of defending Sony for OtherOS crap blind fanboyism? If you just have no argument, I can understand. But stating that "defending X for action Y" is automatically fanboyism? Stupid.
