That's where mine is on my desktop. It works nicely for fitting more windows in the taskbar and still being able to read the text in each, and since monitors are so wide these days, you can often afford to lose some horizontal real estate.

On my laptop, on the other hand, I put one panel at the bottom and none on the sides since its screen is only 1024px wide.

I want to have an overview of all my opened programs and their windows, instead of getting them categorized in a few task bar buttons. I'm always on this wide screen laptop anyway, so there really isn't any loss in 'space' by putting the task bar there.

Everyone has a different way of working efficiently I guess. For me, I work best when focusing on 1 or 2 things and not having 20 windows open. Here at work, I try to keep just the required programs open. If I'm not using something, I close it. Even if I may need to use it later in the day.

I would show a screenshot of my work desktop, but that might be against policy (sensitive information). But this is my wallpaper. I had my 22" monitor here for a while and wanted a wallpaper at 1680x1050 that was similar to the Microsoft Bliss.

My mom has a similar style screensaver, though if left on for too long that silly "cannot allocate the .DIB" error message shows up.

I set up a scheduled task to download this cloud image every three hours, and Xplanet to generate a new image and update the wallpaper.

The only problem is that a command prompt window pops up briefly when it fetches a new cloud overlay. I haven't figured out how to hide that yet.
