I have a whole mental list of metaphors to simplify explanations. They seem to work with most people, to get them to grasp concepts like a wireless network, a firewall, why VNC is useful, what SSH is for, or what a DNS server does. My job is partially tech support, though ... so it's part of my job to be a walking pseudo-techcyclopedia. :x

Oh god, I did this once. Well, it was with the cable modem. The guy they had come out and install it had no idea what the fuck he was doing because I was using Firefox exclusively, and had flat-out removed IE from that installation of Windows. He couldn't work the web setup program because I had a different browser. How sad~

A lot of that stuff is really dreadfully programmed and might not work in firefox. I guess they just refuse to support it because it'd be more work to train people to not be retarded and spent 2 seconds to find the address bar a few pixels from where it is in ie.
