So, I just acquired a brank spankin' new cellphone ™ today (and before anyone asks, no, you're not getting my number.)

I figure "oh man, this needs more mega man 2 stage intro theme as a ringtone", right? Well, turns out it's not necessarily possible... out of the box... and without a barrage of stupid hacks to use custom ringtones.

Even then, Nextel forces you to pay for ringtones should you go with the "official, not needing ugly hacks" route. Considering the phone itself cost nearly $400, it should have very few restrictions with what I can do with it.

Reminds me of my dinky little phone, which, despite it having the ability to "surf the web", can't access pages on ports other than 80 (it returns a message saying "Network gremlins") nor can it download .gifs, .jpgs, .mids, or anything for use as wallpapers or ringtones (garnering 403 forbidden errors when it tries). But I guess that's what I get when I buy a $20 phone...a $400 phone probably should do a lot more than that.

Exactly. I have the tools to convert audio to any format my cellphone supports, so why is it that I can't get new ringtones without paying money out of my ass for them? ._.

Yeah, the only ways I know of to get custom ringtones or wallpapers on my phone is to buy a nonexistant cable or email them to it, and of course it costs money to receive the email.

I should see if there are any ugly hacks available.

I'll have to keep this in mind when I get a cell phone. If I can't put my own ring tones on it without paying extra the cell phone automatically gets throw into the "no" pile

My old phone was that way, although the cable existed. It did, however, cost something like 40 bucks for one, though...

I feel the need to mention that I like my new(-ish) phone. It just needs a standard mini-USB cable and software that you can readily find online... And can use ringtones in MP3 format.

Not that I didn't hack the shit out of it anyway, of course. A combination of Motorola's and Alltel's startup noises is just a bit too irksome to leave on.

Actually, consider it... a 10 second ring tone (or 30, whatever) and they can charge you $1.99? Lots of people are stupid, so it's basically free money.

Hm... awhile back, I had an old, black and white cellphone... it came with Tetris, a Breakout clone, and allowed you to create your own ringtones for it by pressing in notes, with a large selection of pre-coded ringtones... After I got a new cellphone, it has no built in games (you could buy them, though- in fact, it cost money to use the online store!), no self-writing of ringtones, and a paltry set of built in ringtones... it definitely looks like the companies are milking the customer for everything they can get.

I just send midi's to my phone. I had a certain model that had some weird midi type support that was like X(somethingsomethingsomething) and it made types of midis that were made that way sound great.
Right now I have Kirby Super Star - Invincible Lollipop as my ringtone and the Pokémon Healing Theme as my "YOU GOT MESSAGE"

I've got MID and MP3 support on my phone. Uploading them to my phone's as simple as sticking this microSD card into my comp, sending whatever I want over and that's about that.

Heck I can have anything really. I don't have to worry about that bullshit 'trading MP3 ringtones' factor; I make my own.
