Although Windows 95 was EOLed by Microsoft in 2001, software continued to support it for many years afterwards (I think Firefox 2 unofficially supported 95, for example... so that is seven years after its end of life... wonder if anything will still support Windows 2000 in 2017 xD)

As for me, I used Windows 98SE as my main OS until 2006, when I upgraded to Windows 2000 (but that only lasted a short while as I got a new computer with XP SP2 on it...), and a friend of mine used Windows 95 until 2006 (before that, she had Windows 3.1 until 1999, I believe =P)

Windows 7 would have been unpopular as well if it came out after XP. The problem was a lack of driver support, and that's not all Microsoft's fault. Companies are lazy. An OS needed to take the heat to get people to move over while changing how drivers worked, and Vista was that OS.

Firefox isn't what it used to be anymore, either. I liked it at first because it was small, compact, fast and lightweight, now it randomly crashes and consumes way too many resources for what it's supposed to do.

As for the whole Windows XP thing, it's outdated. Just as outdated as Internet Explorer 6 is. You can't expect a supplier to keep supporting an outdated product for ever.

The number of "predecessors" doesn't matter at all, especially when you consider things like AOL (AOL 10, still sucks) and, say, Firefox 2 (which was actually pretty good).

The issue is, it may or may not actually succeed in that endeavor.

There is a chance people may ignore it and stay on Windows XP, or move to Linux, or move to Mac, rather than risk 7. As a result, keeping it to Vista/7 may just damage IE's usage rather than help it.

But that would be welcome to me, as I want IE to lose its spot as #1 some day.

And yeah. They had better fix that memory leak in Firefox some day before we all die of old age.

If you don't want people to use the OS anymore, why is your life for it so extended?

Moving IE9 support to Vista/7 only will probably just push people who care about their browser being up-to-date into Firefox/Chrome/Opera instead. Then again, I'm probably speaking out of having a very nasty experience with 7. :/

...As for the actual minimalism UIs themselves, I like them. Hell, I disabled my menu bar in Firefox. I'll press Alt if I need to use it. (which isn't very often, actually)

So not supporting Windows XP is the right move. Everyone needs to get moving on upgrading to Windows 7 and this will definitely add to that cause. I like Windows 7 and I want to use Internet Explorer again, but it had become so bloated that I welcomed the switch to Chrome. Maybe it is a little too minimalistic for everyone, but there was a lot of crap in IE that needed to go anyway. I'm sure they'll implement features that allow you to hide or show bars as necessary. This supposed leak was probably just to show they're on the same track as Firefox and Chrome in terms of design.

Meh, I dislike Windows 7 a lot... a WHOLE lot.

Thankfully, Vista will be 'supported' as long as 7 is in the same way 2000 was/is alive for as long as XP was/is due to the extremely similar kernel.

Also, Explorer experienced a massive amount of tweaking that I really do not like.

I used Windows 7 on both my laptop and desktop and could never get it configured just the way I wanted.

Vista + UXtheme patch (Vista's aero had some issues I don't like) = solid.

I also had issues with never being able to disable that damned aero preview in 7, but disabling it in Vista worked perfectly. I actually thought the Vista implementation was better implemented.

But, these people are generally savvy enough that they use other browsers anyway -- not being able to upgrade to IE9 is not a problem. They're looking at things more from a stand point of "if it ain't broke..."

Yeah, sure, eventually they're going to have to upgrade in like 2014 or something, but I really don't think that missing out on IE9 is going to bother the above-mentioned people much, considering all the available alternatives.

The average user is going to either use what they have already, or search for a free alternative before they even consider an expensive/time-consuming/limiting OS upgrade just to IE9.

(How is Microsoft "gentler" and "less evil," out of curiosity? I found that statement objectively intriguing. Their business model and product lineup is mostly the same as it was in the 90s, if you ignore the XBox. They seem just as aggressive as they have always been.)

XP support would have been trashed by the old Microsoft eons ago, the Xbox 360 would probably have seldom been updated past what was needed to keep it from melting, rather than compete with Google they would have attempted to steal what they could and buy out anything Google was 'partners' with, and so on.

Bill Gates was a real demon. Ballmer can be nasty, but back in the 90's, Microsoft all but went out and killed whoever threatened their market share. They wouldn't have taken so long to do a new IE, either; they'd probably have gone hyper-extreme with developing it and then aggressively bombarded users, and fought the EU tooth and nail over that browser selection screen thing.

(They tried to fight, but, it was sort of a shadow of how Bill Gates literally went toe to toe with the Supreme Court here)

They're not 'nice' today, but their actions seem to be more in line with 'mundane corporate competition strategy' and no longer blurring the lines between a corporation and a mafia.

Oh, yeah, and things like OpenOffice would probably be arbitrarily locked out of the OS by some random and "unintentional" "update."

In fact, XP was an extremely nice move by them, since before they saddled consumers with a hacky patchwork stuck atop DOS while saving the big boy OS for their business customers. The old Microsoft would have kept this distinction and exiled people to the only thing worse than Vista--continual relatives to Windows ME.

Back when, I hated Microsoft like I hate Google today, solely over this kind of stuff. I don't really favor any one company for hatred unless it slides towards treating users as morons, releases buggy, untested garbage, or alternatively tries to control users externally. Or in general is obnoxious.
