Post layouts. That's it - I don't even notice the usernames unless it's a layout I don't recognize or not a layout at all.

A lot of the time, I go by avatars since I often have layouts turned off.

| I think in general, I tend to recognize people first by their avatars. If someone changes their avatar, it will just take me a few moments to readjust to it. This is the reason why I don't like it when boards assign people an avatar (so that a lot of people will end up with the same ones), or have no avatars at all, or do "themes" where every user has a similar avatar (one time I was at a forum where everyone had a different colored square for an avatar). I'll either get confused as to who is who or may not even bother associating posts with the names at all. |

Usernames, unless it's a new/changed one. I have post layouts turned off, and I don't visit often enough to recognize avatars (most likely). Which means it's mostly just an anonymous blob of people with a few names that I have seen before here and there.
I realize this may come off as arrogant, but that's just how it is. I used to visit this place (or community, but this was when it was called Acmlm's. It might not be the same community anymore, perhaps more like a.. newer incarnation with fragments of the old. ).. uh, to long parantheses.
Anyway, I used to visit this community more frequently in the past, and make a few posts here and there on a daily basis. Of course, I don't know if I ever contributed to anything worthwhile (probably not), but atleast I was there. |

User names, layouts, and avatars.
There was a few long phases where nobody could keep a damn name here for more than a month. It was pretty annoying. Apparently most of the names originated from IRC, but I don't frequent it, so I just stopped paying attention to who anybody was. ____________________ |

 | I usually look at a member's avatar first. The problem is that some members change their avatars a lot more frequently than they change their layouts so it's not uncommon for a changed avatar to throw me off every once and a while. If avatar fails then I check a member's layout, and if I'm really lost then I'll just look at their username .

Layout, followed by avatar, followed by username. When people change everything at once, though, then I get confused and check their profile.

I seriously never gave it much thought.

We seem to be talking about ourselves quite a bit lately, aren't we?
Anyway, I have layouts off, so I notice the avatar first, username color second, and the actual username last. (Custom titles vary depending on how visually striking they are; for example, mine falls at the bottom of the list while Anya's pixel art used to be at the top until she moved it to her avatar.)
Now, the interesting part is that it takes just a few glances to get used to a new avatar, several days to get used to a new username color, and an incredibly long time to get used to a new username. (How long is that? Well, I'm just starting to accept Onyx as, well, Onyx instead of Bloodstar, but I have no idea how long ago that change was made.)
This is reflected in myself, as I frequently change my avatar, I only voluntarily changed my username color once after initially setting it to male, and I've never ever changed my username.
When all else fails, though, a quick look at the user's past posts and maybe past threads usually does the trick. |

Chi.
Sidebar first ([background], avatar, name, title), then post itself.
Looking at the layout is just a side-effect of reading the post.

I notice the post layout, definitely. The difference is, I recognize color more so than the images/patterns in them. Like Metal_Man's contrasting white and black background, it took me a few months to closely look at it and say, "Hey, that's actually a gray-scaled image of snow and trees."
If their layout is plain or nonexistent, I'll go for their avatar colors, and identify them with those.

#54In this order:
1- Post layout (unless disabled)
2- User picture
3- Username or color
4- Posts (like if someone changes everything and I can't tell who it is anymore )
From biggest to smallest on screen, pretty much ____________________ |
