RIP, Yahoo Search: Why I'm Not Shedding a Tear

I rarely use Yahoo for searches anymore, but whats the point of having a search engine that's powered by a different search engine? You might as well just direct them to the Bing page if they're using the search... I just did one and at the bottom it says, "Powered by Bing™".

I still use yahoo as my main email account. If they make that switch to Bing/Microsoft/MSN, I'm done with Yahoo.

Anyone else remember Excite or Hot Bot? Those were two other search engines I remember from the semi-early days of the Internet, before Bing/MSN/Live, Google and Yahoo. =)

The two I find myself using most are Yandex (a Russian search engine) and Google =D

I suppose it'll just be a battle between Google and Bing. Competition is good, but having more than 2 is certainly better, but it seems everything is devolving in to just 2 options.

Yahoo seems to be irrelevant any more these days. The only thing I hear it used for is Groups (which Google has now anyway) and Games (most of which haven't been updated in many, many years as far as I can tell)

To that end, I guess nobody knows about Baidu? It's the Chinese search engine, and the only one giving Google any serious competition for usage.

Baidu censors itself to meet China's regulations. Google doesn't want to and China has never liked them for it. Which has made many a tech news blog.

Yahoo still has Yahoo!Answers where you have a 50:50 chance of getting good advice or a ridiculous answer to your mundane questions.

Edit: On a side note, using Baidu's handwriting box is fun. Its the bottom right link next to the search button. Looks like this 手写

I only mentioned it because everyone seems to forget that Baidu exists.

True. But its only a rival because of the sheer volume of internet users in China. With almost 20% of the world's population, anything big and/or popular in China likely has more users than anything else in the world.

Plus, most of us [don't] speak Chinese.

edit: making statements are usually best when worded correctly.

Okie dokie.

My point still stands, though; there are a bunch of other engines out there, even if you haven't heard of them lately.

Believe it or not, the switch to Bing hasn't changed much, since Yahoo engineers just turn around and make it Yahoo-like anyway.

That said, my hatred of Google is palpable, since their lies fooled enough people to cause this slow death for my favorite search engine.
