Did Microsoft Just Leak Internet Explorer 9's New Interface?

Microsoft has yet to reveal IE9's interface—not set to debut until next month. But ZDNet's Mary-Jo Foley says she caught a glimpse of IE9's new minimalist look via a slip-up on Microsoft's Russian press site.

Looks like they're finally going with the minimalist style. If its as fast as Chrome, I may switch back to IE. This could all be a hoax or photoshopped, but you never know.

Could also be a mock-up. This wouldn't be the first time design plans for IE have been released.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Gah, what's with this crazy minimalism crap? I know I don't like crowded or cluttered interfaces, but stuff needs to be functional. Look at Opera for example, with the menu bar on. It doesn't take up much space and most of the features are easily available in a click or 2, rather than having to dig through all kinds of menus.

I certainly don't understand this trend, could someone please explain it to me? Are they just copying Chrome or some other browser? Why did they start the super-minimalistic/hide options in menus interface design?

As for the validity, it's really probably not far off, but likely certainly subject to change.

This is a good thing, if you ask me. They've been falling behind rapidly over the last year. I will go back to IE if its as fast as Chrome.

I'm a fan of the minimalist trend. I think it's started from the whole Web 2.0 designs of the last 2-3 years. "Less is more" as they say. Things that aren't used that often don't need to be prominent in the interface. The latest Chrome beta has all the options under 1 main button. Thats all you really need. I don't have a need for anything but the home bar and favorites button and then the tabs, obviously.

I don't get it either. Monitors are getting bigger, so let's make the interface smaller!
I can understand it on laptops and the kind (I'm using Firefox with Classic Compact here), but it should not be default.

"Looks like" ≠ "behaves like".

I personally hate the Chrome trend. If you want to look like Chrome, make it an option. Don't suddenly decide that you want to stand completely out from every single other application just because you happen to be a browser.

In fact, the custom skinning and shit just causes more memory waste/bloat.

I feel like I've seen the above shot or something like it on some old MSDN blog or something; it's probably a mockup.

About the "minimalist" UI fad: just ugh.

Was there anything wrong with the old IE6 (or earlier) interface? Buttons and menus and an address/bookmark bar, maybe a search bar. Sure the NCSA Mosaic-based Trident engine was full of holes, but at least the UI made sense. I mean, say what you will about Windows 7 and Office 2007 having the Ribbon UI -- this IE9 mockup isn't even consistent with any UI philosophy that Microsoft has ever worked with.

Hiding the "advanced" functionality in the end is just going to piss people off. When Firefox 4 debuts with its "innovative new design," there's going to be extensions or other apps out in hours, just to bring back a standard UI (or continue using FF3.)

This, this, a thousand times this. I tried the beta and loathed it.

If I want to use Chrome, I'll use Chrome.

I hate minimalism, and even went to the Blog of one of the developers for the minimalist FF4 look and punched him in the jaw over it.

This is going to look as stupid as XP's fisher price scheme to people in 6 years, mark my words.

It doesn't speed anything up, if anything it slows it down. Without my back, forwards, and other buttons in view I have to press a button to see a button which I then have to click. That's just absurd.

I switched to Google Chrome a few months ago, but I'd rather have a menu bar myself... Arora reminds me of K-meleon moreso than Firefox, though (I'd much rather have a Firefox-style interface, but with WebKit instead of Gecko) =/

Surprise. When was the last time Microsoft did something truly innovative?

Their motto is pretty much "wait until someone else does it, then do it ten times worse." Been that way for a long time.

I love the minimalist trend. Hide shit I don't need, just leave the most-used stuff on it.
If I need the menu bar, I'll hit Alt and bring it up. I usually don't need to.
Now, if you're constantly using the menu bar and whatnot, I can see why you'd be annoyed.
But from what I recall, the menu bar can be re-enabled with just a right click, at least in Firefox.
Also, Chrome is ugly as shit. I'm glad that the Firefox team isn't cloning its style exactly. If they did I'd jump ship.
I gotta be honest, I kinda like the UI that they've got going there, but... It's IE.

I couldn't care less about how it looks, though the minimalism trend is annoying. Last week I helped someone configure an email account in Windows Live Mail on a Windows 7 Home Premium PC, took me for friggin' ever because there isn't a many or anything.

It's mostly the supposed CSS3 support that'll make me use IE9. Just for testing purposes.

I like compact layouts that don't waste screen space (see Firefox and even Explorer), but I'd still rather have everything available on screen when I need it (without having to remember to hit another key or button first), so I hate that new trend too ...

Internet Explorer 9 won't support Windows XP, so it'd be a no for me right now either way

This is the only thing I'm not looking forward to. Not supporting the most widely-used OS seems a bit unfair, but at the same time I can see it as being their way of getting everyone up to the lastest system. But at the same time, it makes it even more difficult to get everyone to progress by requiring a new OS just to upgrade your browser. Guess what most people will decide?

Even better if upgrading to Windows 7 would require a new computer (wouldn't be the case for many, but still), then it'd be the most expensive browser upgrade ever

Of course, most would either stay with Internet Explorer 8 or switch to newer alternatives that still support XP ...

Or maybe Microsoft feels Vista+7's combined 35% share that won't beat XP for another 1-2 years is already enough

I'm waiting for them to wind up releasing IE9 for XP when they realize it's cheaper than fixing IE8's security flaws separately.

I, for one, don't dislike the whole "not compatible" with XP thingy they're beginning to have.

I was going to write a rant, but bleh I just woke up and it probably wouldn't make much sense.

Anyhow, am I the only one who thinks this could turn out decent? It's not like other web browsers are AMAZING by any means.

And minimalism is a fad and it would be stupid of microsoft to not get on it while most of the users seem to want that.
