Have you ever been addicted to a particular video game or series?

It tends to happen to me with strategy games (currently Sid Meier's Civilization III, as people with Twitter may have found out). I've also got addicted to Zeus, Age of Empires I and II, and other games of the strategy and simulation genres. It gets to the point where I play the game for hours and never want to stop playing

My dad is worse. He's played almost nothing but Civ III for almost a decade now. He usually plays the same way, too. Always conquering the world. He does play different civilizations, at least, though.

Final Fantasy VII... I first got addicted to that game way back in 1998, when I got that and a PS1 for my 14th birthday... I absolutely couldn't wait to get home and play FF7 every day after school. =/

I even actually fell asleep on the world map when playing FF7 (good thing it wasn't in the middle of a battle, huh? =P)

I think there was a point in my life where I was addicted to RPGs in general. Now, I don't feel addicted to anything. I actually think I've developed a slight aversion to starting games I've never played before. I can still force myself to do it now and again, but usually when I get the urge to play a video game, I'll gravitate towards replaying an old favorite.

This is me basically. There are some games though that once I get in the mood to play them, they kind of take over my life for a bit until I beat the game for yet the nth time. These games include the Paper Mario Series, Banjo-Kazooie, Mario RPG, and Actraiser. It's really just the way those games are set up though. You just don't want to stop until you finish a chapter, but once its finished you don't want to stop until you open up the next one, and once that's done just have to start the next one, and then the cycle continues. These are good games to play when I know I'm going to be sick with nothing to do for a few days though.

I played Kirby Super Star so much, even after the N64 came out. Nowadays I don't play much of anything because of being away from home.

Yep, I'm like that too. It took me years to try Final Fantasy games, for one

Hey, if old games keep one happy, one may spend less on new games. Right? I still play old Mario and Zelda games that I've beaten zillions of times already My mom always thought that was silly. She generally likes to experience books, games, and similar things once and then she's done with it, ready to experience another book or game.

Yes. Pretty much video games as a whole.

I can break down some games, such as KotOR, FFX, FF6 and Dragon Age.

Not really. I can only play one game for so long before I move on to the next one.

I can never figure out how people can stay with one game for so long. Guess I'm the polar opposite.

Tetris Attack. For about a year, I had to play it every night before bed or I couldn't sleep.

Not really. At least, not to the point where a game becomes an obsession.

I used to sink a LOT of time into RPG's, though... I played the hell out of FF6 when I first got it but even at a young age I knew when to take breaks. Didn't even need to be told to by my parents.

Considering that Metroid: Other M comes out on a Friday, as soon as I get home from college, I'll be on that for the next 3 days

World of Warcraft, though not exactly for the game itself but for all of my friends who play it. Friends stop playing, I have not interest whatsoever.

I'm not an addictive personality, so not really. I'll go on binges of video gaming, but never become addicted. PSO itself got about ~400 hours, but I had nothing else to do, and eventually became disgusted with how repetitive it became to the extent I can't even look at other MMORPGs without having flashbacks to useless runs through the Caves and futilely telepiping for rares, and then ultimately just getting free hacked items that made my character able to beat Ultimate Olga Flow almost alone.

Fellow ex-PSO player here. This was the most repetitive MMO ever. It got better when they released new Episodes (expansions) but I stopped playing just after the first one. By then, my brother and I were transitioned to EverQuest.

I've never had an addiction to a game to the point I can't quit it if I want. But with certain MMOs, I've had severe infatuations you might call it. I'll start from the beginning.

I think my first RPG was Final Fantasy 2 (FF4) on the SNES. I don't think I ever finished it the first time I played it because I was only 7 or 8 and my brother had priority on the game system. From then on, we had mostly fighting games (Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct) which were fun for a while but not very addictive.

We finally got a Playstation and Final Fantasy 7. This reignited my passion for RPG games. My brother and I played this through non-stop for a while. I had to play 2nd but I usually watched him play so I already knew what to do. Shortly after that, Final Fantasy Tactics came out and we got it a few months after release. That is still my favorite game ever. I really miss having a PSP so that I can play it anywhere, and I'm so close to switch to AT&T to get an iPhone since they're releasing "War of the Lions" on it next month. It would be about $40 more per month than what we have with Sprint. Thats the only draw back.

So anyway, I played Final Fantasy Tactics start to end several times over the next year. My brother didn't like it as much so he didn't care. Then obviously we moved on to Final Fantasy 8 and then 9. These didn't carry the same obsession as I had with Tactics, but I played 8 through. 9 I just couldn't get that interested in but I watched my brother play it.

After that we started getting in to PC games, such as Quake 3, Diablo II and StarCraft. We would have LAN parties with our friends that would last 8-10 hours into the night. We played Diablo II with a friend of ours only through LAN, although my brother played a little on Battle.net. I never got in to it. Shortly after Diablo II, I got a Dreamcast and played PSO. The only reason I got one was because a forum member from FFLegend.com (my first FF message board) played it. This was all I played, on and off, for about a year.

Then my brother started going to ITT and met some friends that played EverQuest. He got me hooked and we played that together for about 2 years. We switched to Star Wars Galaxies when that came out, and over the next 1-2 years we switched back and forth between the two. Then in 2004, World of WarCraft came out. Since then, I've been playing on and off since the beta. We briefly went back to SWG for a few months but then started up WoW again because of all the forced changed in SWG. It had been completely changed and we didn't like the new combat system.

My brother met a girl (now his wife) and stopped playing WoW but I pressed on. I eventually stopped for a while as well when I met a girl (also now my wife). But shortly after we got married, I got her hooked and now we play together. Its a lot more fun when you have someone to share the experience with. We're not addicted to the point of not being able to give it up or not knowing when to stop. We have stopped for about 3-4 months when both of our children were born. After they got settled in to life, we've been able to play moderately again. So now we have some time on certain nights where we get to raid or quest or whatever. We enjoy playing it together.
