Every time we moved cross country, we would play games with the license plates and try to find one from all 50 states. I think the best we go to was high 20s or low 30s. That was on a 3 day trip from Oklahoma to California, though. Lots of road between the 2.

We weren't even testing for that.

Since in Germany license plates are coded by district (they have a set letter combination), it's fun looking for obscure ones. My best catch so far is BÜS, which happens to be the rarest German license plate with only 800 cars.

US plates have the state at the top (usually) or bottom, spelled out, and don't encode it, so the same plate number can be in more than 1 state. Usually, they're assigned alphabetically, like the AAA series first, then AAB, then AAC, and so on until ZZZ is reached. Then, some numbers count within each series, usually padded like 000-999 or 0000-9999. So, you can tell the rough age of a plate by the letters When they get past ZZZ, they'll rearrange the letters and numbers or add a digit or something. Michigan and Washington both do this, although some other states differ. I think many East Coast states just count from 1 without using letters at all, and having a low plate like "47" is considered a status symbol

Also, for some reason, pickup trucks are usually assigned a separate set of series with only 2 letters instead of 3. I have no clue why. SUVs and vans are usually given the same series as cars.

I rarely see license plates from outside the NY/New England area... I have seen Illinois and Florida, though.

Then again, enough Quebec residents live in Florida... :\
