Seriously... what the fuck are they thinking?

I can understand like $10 million, but $88 million? I'm glad I don't play World of Warcraft...

I want to say "not cool, Blizzard", but sounds like they had some justification:

Blizzard filed the suit in October 2009 after discovering that the PC gaming site was making a profit by operating a private World of Warcraft server.
[...]
In fact, the statutory damages were low, according to the court. The $200 fine per circumvention is a statutory minimum, and in this case it was multiplied by 427,393 users. "To the extent that this figure appears unreasonably large, Congress has mandated this approach and the Court is unable to deviate from it," the judgment explained.
So yeah, they're suing for the minimum required by law to shut down a HUGE for-profit private server.

...unless of course the "per circumvention" bit is something they chose, in which case they can go to hell, but I suspect it's a DMCA thing.

And what is that supposed to mean?

They were charging for their server and using Blizzard's code to host it. And it wasn't a small server, having over 400,000 users. I can understand having a private server that you mess around on with friend, which is still not legal, but it would not draw this sort of reprieve by Blizzard. This was for profit, as HH pointed out.

The only game that I've seen use a private server and had no backlash from the game company was Star Wars Galaxies. The private server creators made their host code from scratch and did not copy it from Sony's servers.

Sure the amount is high, but the ruling is correct.

And 400k users?

Let's say you were charging $2.50 for a month (1/7th of the real price), you're making a million a month.

Yeah, sometimes illegal stuff is trully bad.

Oh, what a creepy, irrelevant coincidence... anyone seen tonight's Mega Millions jackpot? I immediately thought of this when I saw it

Well, I can't really give any justification to that. The person was totally infringing on Blizzard's profits there, so the person's got to pay the consequences.

They just better thank their lucky stars that the judge didn't go with the maximum penalty.

While usually these cases are ridiculous, I have to say--this woman was stealing money from Blizzard, and has to pay it back. So this for one is a just (seemingly) case result.

I'm hoping this doesn't escalate to the point where she actually makes death threats to Blizzard's CEO or legal department... I've actually heard of stuff like that happening (not necessarily with Blizzard, but with other companies) x_X

If she does that, then she's being a stupid bitch. If she can't own up to what she did wrong...

*sigh* The gaming industry has mostly become bloated and unruly and companies are more about the money than fun now.

And Blizzard is the epitome.

Fixed that for you.

The people who run and work for Blizzard still have souls. It's just that they're not allowed to act freely since the merger or they don't have a means of putting food on the table anymore. Bobby Kotick is the douchebag here (and to a lesser extent the woman who ran the server)
