Patch inc in 3... 2... 1...

Thats pretty cool, though. No soldering or internal modifications required.

Watch Sony disable the USB ports due to "security concerns".

It'd probably be easy to work around any patches on any existing PS3s, but new PS3s will probably have some kind of protection against this. Whether it be removing the USB ports entirely or some kind of software fix.

I dunno, we'll see. This is their karma for the Geohotz shit.
So, Pandora for PS3, more or less?

I highly doubt they will do this as almost all of the peripherals use the USB ports to hook up (ala Rock Band, racing wheels, etc.)

But then there'll be a new workaround utilizing wireless technologies, and then Sony will have to disable wireless.

As much as Sony is evil, I don't think they're that stupid. Unless that's what they want us to think.

Still an excuse to sell new proprietary accessories and screw over existing customers. If that's not Sony, I don't know what is.

Now, come on.

That's just plain ridiculous. Removing free stuff and removing paid stuff is wayyyyyyyyy different.

You can't disable use of periphicals even if you feel like it, *especially* if it affects *EVERYONE*.

Seriously, we're not talking about an handful of people here. We're talking about every single PS3 user.

Sony would get sued pretty hard. And they know it.

And if they do it to new versions of the console? Guess what, that's totally fine. Just give it a silly name like the PS3x and state that regular PS3 accessories are NOT compatible.

Sony has until the 31st to win the battle. If the courts stick to their guns, it's not going to happen. Modchips are legal in Australia because the act of pirating is the illegal part, not modifying your console which is how it should be everywhere. There's simply no way unless Sony lies that they can get away with it.

Didn't they already try to justify the Linux fiasco with a "we can remove anything we damn well please" clause in the EULA? And Microsoft doing something similar with the X360 memory units?

Obviously I'm exaggerating but from the bullshit I've seen Sony (and for that matter so many other companies) pull, I wouldn't rule anything completely out.

They'd have to disable USB anyways, it's a USB buffer overflow.

Who told you that? The dongle is based off an actual Sony dev dongle that already does this, why would they need an overflow?

Edit: Hard to find but I see, it's based but they added in a stack overflow.

They could just make a very strict whitelist of peripherals it will accept, maybe add some added layer between the USB driver and OS so if the USB thing goes all stack overflow on it, it just crashes the entire PS3.

Paulguy's Post configuration
If it's as low level as it seems, I imagine it's in some kind of boot rom that would be difficult or impossible to reprogram in existing units. Especially if it's used for repairs, it's probably made to work when the whole OS which can be programmed or updated or whatever and failed, has become hosed.

Yeah, it basically came about as a 'fuck you' to region restrictions as parallel importing is perfectly legal in Australia.

Unfortunately, our courts are pretty big business friendly when it comes to things like this.
