Anyway, long story short, I'm an agnostic atheist*, and I've kinda-sorta always been one. Short story long, my family never really talked about religion. My extended family contained everything from Mormon missionaries to adamant atheists to generations of Catholics to members of a nameless religion(!), but I'll only talk about what's relevant to my religious position. My great grandfather (Namely, my mother's mother's father) was one of those adamant atheists, and that position carried over to my grandmother. As a result, my mother was never really exposed to religion, so she didn't really expose me to it either. My father came from a long line of Catholics, so he went to Catholic school. Apparently, this actually wound up turning him away from religion due to the mean nuns and whatnot, so he didn't really talk a whole lot about religion either. Due to all of this, every instance of religion I encountered until I was about 12 made no effort to force itself upon me. Growing up, I made up a few strange beliefs, but I often wound up dismissing them later on after I realized that they seemed to have no effect on anything. I never really put any thought into religion, though. When I was around 12, though, a friend of mine decided to bring me to his church where some 18-looking guy told us some glurgy story that actually wound up making me question its moral; I still had a pretty open mind, though. Soon, he basically urged us to convert through some prayer then and there, and I remember thinking pretty hard about that. I eventually decided not to (I think), but from that day forth, I was always thinking about religion. It didn't take me long to figure out that I'd need to do some research if I wanted to figure any of this out, so off to the internet I went. The more I read into it, the more I realized that I couldn't believe in Christianity. Eventually, I came to the conclusion that I am, in fact, an atheist, but my research hardly stopped there. To this day, I still strive to learn all I can about the world's religions. Although I'm almost certain that I won't be converting any time soon, they still fascinate me to no end. *This means I don't currently believe any sort of god exists, but I recognize that I do not know with certainty that no god exists. |
