Sony Ericsson Readying an Android 3.0 PlayStation Phone?

It seems that Sony Ericsson -- a company that has yet to even introduce an Android 2.0 device -- is at work on a project to redefine gaming on Google's mobile platform. We now know (via a trusted source) that the company is actively and heavily developing a brand new gaming platform, ecosystem, and device (possibly alongside Google) which are already in the late stages of planning. And we've got the goods on it.

This might be worth getting. Could it be the PSP 2.0? It could rival the iPhone as a phone/mobile gaming platform. Imagine being able to download PSone games or new Sony releases straight to your phone without jailbreaking or hacking? Sounds like a win win situation to me.

That was back before Android and iPhone, both solid mobile OS platforms capable of gaming. And sliders weren't that popular, either. This looks like it has potential as long make it aesthetically pleasing and ergonomic for daily use.

I dunno, I somehow doubt that they have a PSP2 ready just yet, be it a phone or otherwise.
It's more likely that this is the PSP/phone combo that was rumored a while back.
It'll probably be like the PSPgo, but with Android as the main OS rather than XMB.
At least, I think that'd be pretty neat. :<

The future of non-PC gaming is definitely handhelds/phones, what with Nintendo's 3DS, the iPhone, the Droid, and now this...

After all, you don't want to lug a PS3 or Xbox 360 around when you can often get that game for Windows (or Mac, even) and play it on a laptop. Much more convenient that way, huh? =P

Besides, most of the gaming I do is on PCs and the DS(i) anyway...

I don't know if Schala's prediction will be correct, but I like the idea

Unlike in the 1980s and early 1990s, now most people already have a PC, and with the economy being bad, they might not want to spend extra money on a game console. Same with mobile phones. You already have one as a phone, so why not use it to play games, too?

What bothers me with these Handheld gaming devices slash phones is the battery life.

Seriously.

If the gaming part is really good, then I'll ruin the phone part since I'll be abusing that battery like a madman.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I imagine Sony would know better than to make a gaming platform with bad battery life. At least I hope so.

The thing that most phones fail in with gaming is controls. The majority are very difficult to play because of a lack of buttons, or really bad buttons. This would probably solve that problem. Hopefully the phone will be an open enough platform where a lot of games can be ported or written for it, like usable emulators.

It should also be leaps and bounds above ANY handheld available now, which makes me worried about the cost without contract, or people who just don't need/want a(nother) phone.

PSPhone rumours have been floating around basically as long as the PSP. It would be nicely ironic though to see a phone running Android - an open-source OS - with all the proprietary bullshit Sony will put into it. (These are the guys who moved from a standard USB connector to a proprietary one for the PSP Go, removed Linux from the PS3, etc.) I wonder how they'd even pull it off.

This, this, a million times THIS.

I don't know how anyone can play games decently using fake buttons/analog sticks, overlaid on top of the game screen (some of us have large thumbs!), with no tactile feedback. If this turns out to be the future of handheld gaming, you can count me out.

Not to mention doing such after saying they wouldn't.

I'd honestly rather go for an iPhone over a PSP phone, even with its dodgy control methods. I still like my PSP, but after the shit with the PS3 I wouldn't expect myself to go with another Sony console again.

I don't see how the removal of such a MINOR feature somehow makes you guys go apeshit.

Seriously, chances are the decision wasn't even Sony's. It's easy to have gaming corporations go: "we fear that people might exploit that feature. Please remove it or we won't publish games on your system anymore"

Besides, what happened to GAMING platforms actually playing GAMES anymore.

I don't care about the 120410834989438 features if it freaking doesn't play GAMES.

See, this is why I like PCs better... you can run any x86 OS on them (DOS, Windows, Linux, (with hacking) OS X, FreeBSD, AROS, Haiku, eComStation...) without having to worry about having the capabilities removed. You can also play both floppy/CD/DVD/Blu-ray based games and Steam downloaded games. And with emulators, you can emulate many old computers (early Mac, Amiga, Atari ST, DOS-based PC, Apple II, Commodore, etc.) and game consoles (Atari 2600, NES, Genesis, N64, PS1, even GameCube and PS2) =)

Plus, you can upgrade the CPU, GPU and PSU in a PC... so if a new game comes out and it doesn't run on your 1.5-year-old computer, you can just upgrade your CPU and/or GPU. Try that with a game console!

*Plugs in SEGA CD and SEGA 32X, then upgrades the Mega Drive's CPU with a similar, faster one*

Er... bad example. It's sort of too bad nobody followed SEGA's lead on the upgradability front. Imagine just sliding a piece out of the Xbox and connecting a new one to make it into an Xbox 360.
