My little build with 4GB instead of 8GB would run around $680, but that's with high-quality components and a much better processor.

It's a little lame that I can't find what components are actually in that build, though. Looked it up on Compaq, still had nothing.

I mean, what your Dad got wasn't a bad deal, but you can definitely get more bang for your buck.

If you don't mind open box, there's a 23" that's cheaper than his, (Including shipping) and a 24" that's about £13 more.

Both have built-in speakers.

EDIT: I just reached the sex scene in Mass Effect and I have to wonder, how the hell did people find that offensive? There wasn't even a NIPPLE in there. It was essentially what you see in game ALL THE TIME, just with a different texture.

If you get one in a mid-to-full sized ATX case, they should be relatively expandable. Besides the stupid external stuff on my Gateway case, I had no trouble adding stuff... Including a 3.5" bay, a 9800GT, a new PSU, and RAM (Then again, you have problems if you can't get RAM.)

Most recent premade computers I've dealt with have been relatively friendly to upgrades, which is nice. You will need to buy a new PSU for any graphics card you buy, though.

Oh, and on topic - 3D Dot Game Heroes is hilarious. However, I hated the desert area. And it sucks not having a sword with pierce.

I'm definately going for that Compaq PC. It is amazing and well worth it. ATI 5850, which comes with a different Steam download, depending on the maker. If I go with HIS, I get COD6. Kinda pointless, considering that I've beaten it on the PS3 and I've never been bothered to play enough to even Prestige once. I'll keep my current monitor for a while and allow my funds to get bigger again. I don't desperately NEED a new monitor, but it would be nice to get one. I also need a new mouse. The current mouse is so old that it is starting to double-click when it don't want it to. The older mouse only clicks half the time.

I wish I could combine the two. I'd end up with one good mouse

Putting together a computer is actually lots easier than it sounds. I mean, even I could do it, and it sure saves a lot of money. And he could always ask someone he knows to help him, I'm sure he should know someone who knows this stuff. ____________________

Just make sure you get somebody who knows their stuff to vet everything before you buy. You don't want to end up with incompatible RAM, an Intel mobo with an AMD CPU, or *cough* not the right cables in your power supply.

The rest is just basically plugging it what goes where. Honestly, the thing I struggled with most was the damn power LEDs and stuff for the front of my case.

True, and I'd be glad to help him out like I did someone else And the motherboard manual usually has a diagram of what wires go where for the power, reset, and LEDs. Without it, its a guessing game unless your motherboard is labelled clearly. ____________________
