I'm not sure if this counts as playing, but I went through every normal mission in every galaxy of SMG2 in one day. Why? Because.

I've got an nVidia 8100 in here... my old Pentium II has an awesome (for the time) 16MB S3 card... I remember companies like S3 and 3dfx being very popular in the mid-to-late 1990s...

I think graphics were much cooler in the early 90s, though... color cycling, Mode X, high-color...

This Power Mac G4 still runs a 64MB Radeon 9000 Pro.

My PC's running a 1GB GeForce 9500GT, though. I love the thing.

Ah, that's what my dad thought. But to buy Windows 7, a quad core, a 1000gig (*cough*1000gigsisNOToneterabyte*cough*) harddrive, keyboard, mouse, monitor, graphics card and PSU is a helluva lot MORE expensive that getting the premade computer with most of the above components, then buying the PSU, monitor and graphics card. Seriously, he saved about £200 getting the premade one instead of building it himself.

Windows 7 is $100
PSU for under $70
A decent case is $50
Monitors are frequently on sale and under $200 for a 22-24"
A good motherboard is less than $150 (Most ones on manufactured computers are crap.)
8GB of RAM for $160
DVD Drive is $20
You can get an amazing processor for under $200.
Keyboard and mouse together should be under $40.
1TB harddrive for $60.

That's around $1050 (high estimate), while completely splurging on RAM, monitor, and PSU. Not to mention all of the components are going to be higher quality than anything you'll get on a pre-made.

Seriously. Just look at the monitors with over a $40 rebate.

Do that for all the parts I listed, and you'd probably spend less than $900.

Here's stuff I've bought/a friend has bought recently that's applicable to you:
Case + 3GHz Quad-Core CPU for $170.
Motherboard for around $115
8GB of RAM for $170.
650W Corsair (Basically the best brand you'll get.) PSU for $70.
That's $525. A good 1TB harddrive brings that up to $600. Windows 7 makes it $700. DVD drive makes it $720. Keyboard and mouse: $760.

You're going to buy a premade computer, and then rip out and replace the most expensive stuff. What premade computer has a good quadcore CPU, 4+GB of RAM, and is under $600? And the stuff you're replacing is going to cost close to $200 anyways. If you're somehow ending up making a system that's more expensive than a premade on the higher-end of specs, you're doing things terribly wrong.

	Low end premade computers are the better buy since they make them in bulk and reduce the prices. Like the $399-$499 walmart specials. You'll be hard pressed to match those with anything custom built. And some of them have decent enough processors that if it comes with a PCI-e x16 slot you can buy a $100 video card and have a playable machine for $500-$600. Its not top of the line but at least it can play games on low to mid settings. But if you want to build a decent gaming rig, going custom is almost always cheaper... at least here in the states. I don't know what companies you have for parts over there so I can't say if its better everywhere. But I can build a $900 system sans monitor that would cost $1500+ from Dell or similar. Even with a decent monitor, it would only be $1100. Oh, and by the way I'm still playing SC2. I want to get a round of Final Fantasy Tactics going again, just need to get a gamepad for my laptop. Maybe do a "Lets Play Together" type thread with it. ____________________

Shadic, if I could remember the link that my dad had found for the pre-built Compaq that I'm sitting next to, I'd give you it. In any case, it is immense and is cheaper than buying the components seperately. The computer came with:

Quad Core Processor
1000gigs harddrive
In-built graphics (which have been replaced with an ATI 5850)
Windows 7 x64 Home Premium

The only other things that my dad bought is a 1920x1080 monitor, the new graphics card and the new PSU. I've just stopped playing 6 hours of Mass Effect on it and it runs fantastically. I'll ask my dad for the link to the Compaq when he gets back in.
