Guess I was right to laugh when Google said their motto was 'Do no evil.'

If they have their way, arbitrary prioritizing of traffic would be the de facto away of things. They also appear to be interested in destroying all anonymity, if that other article is of any significance.

Yay! Another example why corporations should be illegal. This will not go down without a fight. Anonymity will ultimately prevail that is if enough people give a damn about their privacy, and stop taking it for granted.

After a certain point, if they keep this nonsense up, I'll be inspired to tell everyone I can to stop using Chrome, stop searching on Google, and adblock all Adsense ads. I never liked them to begin with, but if they want to wage war on the internet's current existence in favor of some BS that favors them, then what little one can do to weaken them must be done.

Google and Verizon teamed up to deliver a new phone or something. And post-teamup, for whatever reason, Google has become infected by Verizon's belief in that the end user are morons. Thus, Google now says that anonymity on the internet (having non-real name nicknames/being unidentifiable except by your nickname) is a 'thing of the past' to be 'removed' so as to prevent 'bad things.'

Then recently they've come out with a net neutrality framework which repeats what they did with the oil companies--allow the corporations to do what they want by having them regulate themselves.

The cherry on top? This would include no regulation whatsoever on the wireless part, and toothless, corporate-controlled regulation on dialup/broadband. So basically, whoever Google/Verizon/whoever felt like giving priority could be made faster to access while whatever they didn't want you to see could be either slowed down or blocked altogether.

I won't dump Google Chrome or switch to Bing just yet... but if this keeps up, I might do that. =/

Maybe when my contract is up with Verizon, I might switch to T-Mobile or Sprint... they seem nicer anyway, and don't seem very evil at all. =P

Very tempted to switch to Bing or Yahoo! at this point. Looks like Apple was right on that one.

A few posts elsewhere(manly Sonic Retro) make this thing sound a bit less... well, evil, and more like a sensationalist story deal. I don't want to say too much as I've never read much into the Net Neutrality thing yet, so I'd probably botch it all up, but till someone else more knowledgeable says something, I can at least toss this link from there to give another view. Can't be positive if that would just be pro-Google stuff to cover up something... but I'd rather not be forced to get rid of my G-Mail account that's linked to pretty much everything of mine online to help some protest that would help determine the fate of the internet or whatnot... so I'm kinda hoping Google's not the bad guy here.

In case you didn't know, Verizon and Google have a number of PR links, and ZDNet is a big corporate source through which they can make print whatever they want.

The issue with the ZDNet article you printed is that it pretends Google/Verizon/others won't just use the loopholes in the 'idea' they made to do whatever they want. Now before you tell me 'Corporations aren't going to do anything evil with those', recall that the MMS (a corporate-controlled watchdog) was the one in charge of making sure big oil didn't spill and destroy an entire ocean. Welp... that BP spill kinda rained on that parade, didn't it?

Now of course, I'm not going to deny there isn't some anti-Google bias in what I posted or in what I type, however I will simply ask of you and whatever sources you have, Someguy: What says Google/Verizon...

A. Are not cynically making some sort of ruleset that, one way or another, will let them do what they want
And
B. Are those two companies you want to have control over the speed websites load in your browser?

In specific...

However, as eWeek’s Wayne Rash points out, Net neutrality and smart traffic shaping don’t have to be mutually exclusive:

eWeek's Wayne Rash is not the head of Google or Verizon, nor does he seem to be saying that's what they'll likely do. He's just suggesting that in order to help cover up the obvious flaws in the framework Google/Verizon suggested.

I admit I'm in shock .. as someone that frequently uses Google Search, Maps, Images, Chrome, News, GMail, YouTube and Picassa among other services, I can only say I can't just choose to leave - it would affect my internet life for no good reason since my leaving won't cause Google to lose any meaningful revenue...

But I'm also a Socialist, and this whole Google/Verizon deal pisses me off. What I hope is that the FCC manages to strictly regulate these things. It's up to the government to regulate, we can't just choose to boycott a company that wants certain economic policies that will benefit them because you will end up boycotting them all. The root of the problem is not the big corporations themselves but the government's lack of regulation.

I could see myself leaving Google over this, though it would be difficult to find another decent email provider that isn't going to become total unusable suck within a year or two.

For those who don't get it: the idea is turning the Internet into cable TV. Pay to access specific websites. Companies can pay to have their traffic take priority, effectively choking any smaller businesses that might threaten them. Think of the idiotic package deals TV has now and apply that to the web. Want to use Google? That's $15/month. Facebook? That's another 5. Jul? Never heard of it. Also be sure to check out the news package, that comes with that one news site you actually read plus 35 others you'll never use, for only $25/month.

The solution is: encrypt everything, use Freenet (a completely decentralized, encrypted, anonymous P2P network), and raise hell. Make it clear you're not going to put up with this bullshit.

Those of you completely boycotting Google will want to watch out for AdSense and DoubleClick (now owned by Google), and RSS feeds that sneakily pass through some "feedproxy.google.com" as I've noticed - the feed URLs look normal, the destination page looks normal, but hover over the item in the bookmark menu in Firefox, or watch the URL bar on a slow connection, and you see it go through this proxy. Hmmm.

Uh, the guy just went out and said their goal was the end of all anonymity on the internet, and then partnered with Verizon. 2012 is a bunch of idiots who don't understand Mayan culture believing the end of their calendar is the end of the universe, when such a concept doesn't even exist in their culture. Finally, the end of the planet is not 100% controlled by humans, whereas the internet is. So humans cannot end the planet if they choose, but if you aren't careful, people CAN screw up the internet something fierce.

In conclusion, I think something more substantive than comparing it to rednecks becoming frightened over misinterpreted Mayan calendars is needed if this is to be a hoax. Something like, you know, Google contradicting the Net Neutrality-damaging deals they want by helping the FCC to make strong regulation or something.

It's more what FieryIce said which is a limit, of course. Unless there are vast hordes of people boycotting Google, it'll mostly be symbolic for now, since money-wise they got plenty of people. Still for an old codger like me I feel it's best to at least symbolically oppose them, and if it gets really bad, even go with what Hyperhacker said.

Otherwise if they got their way it could very well be Cable TV, with people like us being silenced UseNet style.

Which sounds like kinda garbage as the internet is supposed to be use able by anyone anywhere with a connection. :/

I mean, really, you'd think that governments would react to this sort of shit. Which is one of the damn reasons I want the pirate party to take over. :/

I mean, damn, shit like this is not even supposed to be able to happen. :/

Its not really saying you would have to pay per website. It would be more like an express lane through a toll booth. They're saying you would have a public network and a private or premium network. The public network would be for your typical web browsing, but the private/premium would be for streaming media, video games, medical information traffic, etc. Basically you can pay your $30 month for web browsing and email, etc. But if you want to play World of Warcraft or watch live broadcasts or for hospitals to transmit data, you would have to pay that extra fee to access the private/premium network.

I still think its a bad idea for a big problem. Although some ISPs don't have issues, others do have severe congestion and they're trying to figure out how to alleviate the problems.
