Apple patent application details iPod / iPhone bike integration system

Described as "Systems and Methods for Integrating a Portable Electronic Device with a Bicycle," the application details what basically amounts to Nike+ for bikes. That includes the ability to relay data from bike sensors to your iPhone or iPod, which you'd be able to view on the device itself or on an external display of some sort

You could also call this the "Lets laugh at Apple's latest patent" thread. Some of the stuff they think up is way out there. I can see how integrating controls into the pedals or handle bars would be helpful. But sending data to other cyclist or navigation? Just another distraction.

First it was "Don't text and drive!". Now I have a feeling it'll be "Don't balance your stats and calories burned while biking!" soon.

Same people will also argue that it was worth it and keep complaining on you for not having one. :/

I never really saw the point the nike plus thingy, and this seams even more pointless.

This could be very useful for cyclists, especially with the idea of an integrated HUD. I'd be 100% sold on it if this technology would involve monitoring for other moving vehicles on the road, since I'm often flustered when I think there's no car coming up at an intersection only to jump because I didn't see a moving car due to fucking SUVs and other large cars blocking my view. I swear this happens at least once during a ride to the library. Or if there's background noise preventing me to listen for cars and such, and almost get hit by one when I'm totally caught by surprise.

Granted, I'm probably still alive now since I check over my shoulder, slow down, wave cars past, use the sidewalk on busy streets, turn on my lights at night, etc. I should wear a helmet, but don't. Watch as this bites me in the ass soon enough.

Paulguy's Post configuration
You know they won't do anything fancy or useful like that. Least amount of effort for the most return.

I use an app called Cyclemeter for the iPhone. It uses the iPhone's built-in GPS to function as a trip computer. It logs all my journeys accurately, so I can measure how far I've cycled on a trip, in a week, in a month or in a year. It also measures maximum and average speed, plots my route in Google Maps and is a really great way to turn a simple commute into routine exercise.

Trust me, the iPhone is already really great at this - and much better than most budget trip computers.

I'd imagine most decent phone-GPS software could do this. It's not exactly difficult (just ping the GPS every 15 seconds or so) and log the relevant lat/long and time. From there it's trivial to figure out the speed/distance/plotting.

Whatever works, really.
