Windows 7 passes Vista in usage

And none too soon, but Vista was needed for its flaws to bring out the good of Windows 7.

For July, Windows 7 was used on 14.46 percent of devices accessing the Internet, compared with Windows Vista's 14.34 percent, marking the first time the newer version surpassed its predecessor. Microsoft has said that 175 million copies of Windows 7 have been purchased since the product was released last fall.

Windows XP is still the most-used operating system, used by more than twice as many users as Vista and Windows 7 combined. Windows XP was used by nearly 62 percent of devices accessing the Web.

I switched to Vista in January 2008 because I happened to buy a new computer. Then, I bought another one in November of last year, and it came with 7.

I've noticed a lot of computers still having XP on them, though.

I still use XP, but as soon as I get my new computer, it'll come with 7. Unfortunately, it won't be able to do Virtual XP, so I might lose a few things. I hope TT64 and SMILE are compatible with 7 O.o

Viva la XP!

I still use XP x64, and will for the foreseeable future. I can just keep transferring clones of the same disc image between sets of hardware.

I'm still using 32-bit, though. I don't ahve anything with more than 3GB of RAM, yet, and even then, chances are I'd probably end up having to download XP x64 anyway due to financial strain.

Can't say I'm surprised 7 passed Vista, though...

XP and 7 are pretty much on the same terms of usefulness right about now.

I'd be more pumped to see XP with backported features from 7 however.

As a person who used Vista and 7 extensively, Vista was actually not that bad, it's just that 7 destroys it in every field thus far. :>

I was on Windows 98SE until mid-2006, actually... I didn't get XP until I bought a new computer, but that lasted like 9 months or so, when I got a Mac after putting up with the problems with that machine (although I *suppose* I could've gone Ubuntu instead of wasting $1200 on a Mac...)

Windows 98SE can still be useful today, with KernelEx and the 98SE2ME add-ons. =D

Overall, I would say that XP is still my favorite. But I am enjoying Windows 7 on my laptop and didn't feel the need to downgrade. Plus I like having 4GB of ram with the x64 version that is standard these days. Maybe I'll eventually expand to 8GB and getting a bigger hard drive.

good times

As for me, my parents had a C64 when I was born, got a Tandy 1000 with DOS 2.11 around that time, then Windows 3.1 in 1993, Windows 95 around 1995, Windows 98 around 1998, skipped to XP in 2001, and I've had Vista in 2008 and 7 in 2009.

I actually hear someone got Aero working in XP. I don't know if it's true or not, but... eh, it's certainly not impossible, is it?

I've used both Vista and 7 a lot myself, and I honestly prefer Vista a little bit. 7's got a few nice features as well, but... I don't quite trust it, seeing as it wrecked 48GB of files when it died. (Since then, I've been pretty much just using XP.)

XP x64 uses primarily the same drivers and also sees my 4GB of memory.

It's also easy to make Aero appear in XP, most of them are secondary solutions but, eh, not surprising.

I use XP on my usual computer but mostly just because that computer only has 256MB RAM. So, yeah. The hand-me-down laptop I had for a while ran XP Media Center Edition before it decided to die for no reason.

If I get a job and money I'll get a nice laptop, and probably use 7 on it. Maybe dual boot a Linux distro if I'm feeling brave.

The only way I'm honestly aware of to do such is TrueTransparency themes. I've used them before, actually, and they're not as bad as you'd expect.
