Guess who's on vacation since 20 minutes ago?

Guess who came home with this game having been delivered in the day?

I got someone to cast my match and offer critique on an interesting match I had: Part 1 | Part 2

I'll update if he casts another of my matches.

What are your opinions about the campaign so far?

If possible please use either no or then use spoiler tags for certain missions.

I finished 9 missions so far, and while the campaign may not be uber-good (never expected that), I really like most missions - as you not only have to destroy or escort things. A welcome change, as the usual selection of goals in RTSes are limited normally. Escort, kill things, survive a certain amount of time and that. The point&click thingy may seem a bit gimmicky, but things like research and stuff are not too bad. I play on "Hard" so far, got kicked in two or three missions, until discovering that it is rather simple, but effective, tactics changing which can make some mission really easy, at least until "Hard" (maybe Brutal will make those tactics harder/impossible, dunno). You have to get the idea first, though

FYI, my review doesn't have spoilers in it. I hate writing a review on the actual story. If you want to experience the story, play it (that's how I see it).

Hubby just finished the campaign yesterday.

Minor gripe #1: Losing connection to Battle.net while playing = no achievements being recorded.

This sucks indeed. You could try the autosave feature for past missions, though, if you knew where you would have gotten an achievement. As there are three of them each, and at least one has to do with fulfilling side missions on Normal or higher, it might be a way back to get them normally (when the connection stands).

Does the game alert you in Single Player, if the connection to Battle.net is lost?

It does not alert you.

However, if you're still playing when you regain the connection, you'll retroactively get your achievements at once at the end of the next mission you finish. Or at least that's my best explanation for why I got Brutal 10 and Brutal 15 at the same time.

I tend to go mostly for Void Rays as quickly as I can. I had someone bitching at me because its a "overpowered strat"... It may be overpowered once its in full swing and I have 8-10 void rays. But he didn't even have half the minerals or units that I had by the end of the match. He could have easily sent an early push and thrown me off, but instead walled and didn't make much of an army. My APMs aren't that high so it still takes me a bit to get a good size void ray army. Its not the best strategy against skill players, but it is fun to see these lesser ones cry about being steamrolled by a bunch of void rays.

I zergrushed my friend's thors

They have problems with a large enough army of zerglings at their feet.

Brood Lords are still overpowered as hell though.

Thors vs Lings? Ouch.

These are really great for annihilating groups of Mutalisks, though - and with multiple SCVs as a repair escort Thors should also be pretty decent against Void Rays - even considering the range and increasing damage VRs do.

I just watched a video for void ray rushing. Seems to work well but is susceptible to ground based rushes. 2 or 3 zealots or stalkers, or a half dozen marines quickly enough, could ruin your whole production.

If your opponent has a lot of Void Rays, Carriers or something similar early you didn't make enough pressure. I know it, thinking I got most of an enemy's army, but not searching the map good enough. Then I see like 6 Carriers coming out of nowhere, killing my expos and then my main base. Personally I just suck in multiplayer, but if I really see TEN Void Rays, the fault must be on my side - not making enough pressure.

Although I have to admit stimmed Marines seem to work quite awell against toss in SC2, also sending an early Marauder with some support is nice, too.

I had a Reaper group that almost took me out. He kept having them jump in and got half of my Probes before I could engage them, then he kept pestering me until I finally had enough Void Rays to take them out. But during all that, he had only made 1 more small batch of Reapers. I took care of them quickly and then went to his base. He had a few random marines and 1 turret. That was it for defense.

I really miss the old 'ling sounds from SC1 though, if I ever make a custom map, I'm using the old ones >.> <.<

But yeah, my friend never put any SCVs with them so my 'lings and then later my broodlords murdered his thors

I love the plot. Its gotten thicker and more detailed since the first game. The one person who can save the universe wants to destroy it. How ironic. For those of you who haven't got that far yet, I'm going to just leave it at that.

A lot of the new Zerg units aren't very cool looking. The exception being the Omegalisk, Brutalisk, and the Hybrids (since they technically count as both Protoss and Zerg.) I guess they get the job done though. Broodlings are now a bit more of a threat. Yeah, sure you don't have to worry about your precious ground units being destroyed in one hit by the Queen's "Spawn Broodling" move but now they don't die when their energy runs out because they have none anymore. They stay alive until you kill them. Plus the fact they come out of destroyed Zerg structures makes them much more of a threat.

Against the computer on casual difficulty, its pretty easy to overwhelm them with a group of 20 or more units, plus, thanks to the fact that you have the ability to control a shit load more units than the original at one time (i.e. you could only control one group of twelve at a time in the original.) you have a much easier time controlling a larger attack force. I found it very difficult to control a ton of units This can be deadly as you can focus you attacks on one target and obliterate them with just a few shots from all of the units in your attack force at once. This means that you can pretty much wipe out an unprepared opponent in very little time if you have a large hoard to attack with.

I've got the collector's edition of Starcraft II so I have the official OST, a Flash drive replica of Jim Raynor's Dog tag, a concept art book, a DVD with tons of footage regarding development of the first Starcraft as well as containing spoilers for the second game, including the CGI cutscenes.

Alas, I can't get a decent frame rate from Starcraft II, even with every application closed on my computer and more than 40 GB of memory free. Its playable, but I doubt it will be on Battle.net. Blizzard should have stuck to prerendering for the gameplay and just made the cutscenes CGI IMO.

I didn't play online yet, lacking time and want to finish the campaign first, but I would never put all my front troops into one large group. Think that, while you can use Psi storm in a group of 200 units, as the icon/hotkey appears nicely like in WC3, you first cannot control where your Templar is at that time. Second, naturally features like Cloak from Ghosts and Stim could overlap.

And it is pretty inefficent to send groups with air and ground straight to a target far away. The air units will probably be faster than the rest and/ot splitting up due to no obstacles in air, ending shot down by Thors and stationary Anti-Air stuff like Turrets. And your ground forces will form a nice queue, basically murdering the first few units in front, as they arrive one by one - before the big messy 'ball' of other troops will attack, too

Performance on my game jumped for some reason today when I played. Before the framerate was all choppy. Now its running pretty smooth even if there is some slowdown, its not that noticeable. I'm still puzzled at how the performance sky rocketed when last night and early this morning, it was still choppy.

Was there something running on your computer before? I know that flash and videos slow down my framerates when playing WoW, so I'd assume the same goes for SC2. Make sure all unnecessary processes are killed before you open the game. Helps a lot.

They were. They always have been.

On another note, I'm disappointed that there wasn't a single mission where you got to control Zerg unless you mind controlled them with the Hive Mind Emulator. That and the fact that the emulator couldn't take control of worker units is sad...

I also miss the Dark Archons..... Those were like my all time favorite units. I hope they return in the planned expansion. However, even if they do, they'll most likely be limited in the same way.....
I'm going to miss mind controlling Drones, Probes, and SCVs to build the tech trees from the other races up..... That was always fun to do when you weren't playing seriously. Guess it was removed due to the more tournament based battle system of Starcraft II.
