So I found this today, pretty cool HTML5 8-bit color cycling

I had found some other fun HTML5 samples but I'll have to go digging for the link again. Post any you find here.

Awesome page! And the last time I tried messing with HTML5 was when I was using a video converted to different formats. I didn't really like the lack of control I had, as compared to JWPlayer for playing a flash movie for example. Then again, I haven't tried it that much yet.

Awesome... reminds me of the good old days of 256 colors and cycling palettes =D

Cycling palettes are cool, since they can emulate water effects, produce cycling rainbow borders, and create other effects, too =D

Unfortunately, high color and true color aren't very good for cycling palettes, so hardware cycling eventually faded out into the past...

Those are pretty amazing, but they keep lagging and glitching.

Most of the old machines this technique would have been used on also allowed you to change palettes between scanlines; another seldom-used trick to boost onscreen colours in some scenes.

but god damn how are these made

I want these sounds too.

Amiga HAM mode, anyone? =D

Basically, the Amiga OCS and ECS were capable of displaying all 4096 colors on-screen at once, by holding two of the RGB components, and changing the third. For example, the RGB color 8CF could be changed to something like ACF, 88F, or 8CC, but not something like CEF. The AGA chipset expanded on this, allowing up to 262144 colors on screen at once, out of a palette of 16777216 colors.

Edit: An example, using the OCS/ECS HAM mode, and the AGA example. =P

Um, Schala, I think you might want to fix your colour codes. I don't think those are all supposed to be black

The C64 just had 16 fixed colours that were not RGB, so you had stuff like brown and even orange
