Your description reminds me of the "location" I set for my old printer: Next to the cat. That cat was always, always sleeping beside it.

Eh. The first one was funnier... Once I understood what the joke referred to.

I've got a computer named "Safe".

I honestly have no idea why, when, or even if I named it that.

I've had many computers over the years since I started networking them.

* There was Super, the old beater from 2000 that, nowadays, barely runs and I often said "Come, on Super! You can do it!" before giving it that official name. It went to a friend who's too stupid to get a job. Good thing it has no hard drive.
* There was Spaffy, Super's successor, which has gone through several iterations, ending with Spaffy 3.0. It is currently a slimline Linux box in the closet.
* Splash, the one I'm using now, was built from parts and has also undergone some revisions.
* There have been many "craptop" computers through the days that ended up as web servers. Who knows what names I gave them on Samba.
* The current web server's name is Kataklizm. Mind you, I named it that before the porn site Kataclizm came into existence.
* The laptop I recently purchased (probably the last one ever that will support WinXP) is perfect except for a middle-grade graphics adapter and a reflective sheen on the display. I named it Glossy.

I always just went with generic names, and refer to the computers by age (which worked when there was just the "Old Computer" and the "New Computer", but now just gets confusing with the "New(er) Computer" the "Formerly New Computer", the "Really Old Computer", the "Upstairs Quasi-New Computer", the "Upstairs Rebuilt Computer"...

The actual computer name on this one is some sort of corporate identification code...

Daily Cycle II ~ 2996
...I had a post typed here but it's gone now.
In short, my naming scheme:

Own towers: Name + clockspeed:
Trashcan 300 (defunct)
Wastebasket 800 (uptime 13wks 6days, web/file server)
Recycle Bin 1100 (defunct)

Laptops: Name / Name2 + clockspeed:
Alexa / Brick 250 (inactive)
Tina / SuperBrick 1800
(assumedly, the next one will be Tina Mk.II / UltraBrick, when/if it comes)

Other computers are usually just given names I feel like:
Newbie, for the newest computer we had (inactive)
Super Pinto for my grandparents' computer that magically exploded (needed a new CD/DVD ROM drive + complete reformat) (online, file server)
Pinto, grandparents computer after it got 25 viruses and exploded (online, fixed)

I am a naming nut

This computer's latest name is "Doom", and the main user account is "Quake". Obvious theme there. No description given though.

Has too much free time

600
Eisnaught - Current computer. 100% functional.
(Last name) - Family computer. 100% functional.
Phoenix - Name for my previous computer tower. Literally melted from heat, so the name wasn't a misnomer.
Izimbra - Our 486. In need of servicing to continue functioning.
Omikron - eMachine 366i2 that's been hopped up. Buried somewhere, but operational.
S.S. Screw Johnny - Zombie computer made of spare parts. Needs a new hard drive. Combination of my first personal computer and a guy whose computer I serviced's parts.
(My first name)'s ULTIMATE LAPTOP - Still functional, overheats horribly, too heavy to use except as a portable desktop.
Stratiquest Laptop - Former property of said company. a 486 Thinkpad, still functional.
ZEOS - First computer ever. Still functioning, used to do work at my Dad's company, and hence is no longer at home (Weird, as it's a 386 Sx--the suckiest computer out of the bunch)

I have too many computers, don't I? X_X

Oh dammit, now I'm going to start naming crap stupidly. Until now I never used the name box, because it was pointless. Actually, upon looking into it, I found I named the computer "Thing", because I'm not creative!

I simply named the laptop I'm on right now my initials-Notebook. Slightly uncreative, but conveys the proper meaning nonetheless.

I haven't used any strange or unusual names yet...

Blobby: K6-III 412 MHz, Windows 98 SE. Used to be my primary computer for Internet and emulation and such, but now merely acts as a file server and e-mail checker because it's so slow.
Eclipse: Athlon 64 X2 4200+, Windows 2000 SP4. Once reserved strictly for games and websites that were too much for Blobby to handle, I now use it almost exclusively.
Microchip: K6-2 550 MHz, Windows 98 SE followed by Windows 2000. Equipped with legacy hardware, such as a Sound Blaster AWE64, this was used for old DOS games until I discovered DOSbox (which actually works better than the real thing). Recommissioned as a file server with Windows 2000 until mysterious hardware problems and lockups sent it to an early grave. RIP.

(named after my comic/video game characters; Blobby is the hero, Microchip is his robotic sidekick, and Silver Eclipse is their little flying car/spaceship)

I name mine after animé characters, but before that it was planets and other space-related crap. This works out nicely because Mercury (this computer), Venus (old POS that exploded) and Luna (laptop) all happen to be character names as well. Descriptions tend to be non-funny and drive names just generic summaries of their contents (System, Files etc).
