Article here.

Though, if you look at the other points of interest on that page, it also looks like this will legalize a bunch of other kinds of 'unlocking', such as changing a phone's carrier, or applying unofficial patches to games.

I wonder if the next version of the iPhone won't need silly jailbreaking techniques anymore.

Wouldn't be surprised if some major shit erupts over Apple not changing things and disallowing support for jailbroken iPhones, though.

...this actually makes me wonder about stances on PSP hacking, honestly... but that's a fairly old subject and I don't really know.

The PSP scene is still fairly active, at one point I was living on my PSP
I hope it will be legal in the UK

I'd be surprised at this, except that I didn't know it was ILlegal. Then again, I've never wanted to potentially wreck my phone.

I'm sure Apple is really unhappy about this. You know how they always try to keep strict control over how consumers use their products.

Cool, they're starting to fix the DMCA. (Correct me if the 1998 federal law referenced in the article is something different.)

I've always been of the opinion that once you legally pay for a piece of hardware, you should be allowed to do whatever you want with it, provided the modification(s) don't hurt anybody else (like turning a microwave oven into a death ray and pointing it at your neighbor's cat).

I'd doubt it, as the UK if anything is pro-electronics makers being able to screw you over.

This article has some great quotes from Apple.

Apple's goal has always been to insure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone and we know that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience

"Severely degrade the experience" by allow us to do more than you want us to?

Apple outlined its concerns with jailbreaking on its support page, including device and application instability, unreliable voice and data, disruption of service, the aforementioned compromised security, shortened battery life, and inability to apply future software updates.

You mean jailbreaking has all the same problems of not jailbreaking? Shocking!

Yeah, I hope if anything more exemptions like this are made. It's time for customers to take back their ground and start controlling things which they as "consumers" aren't allowed to modify, despite it being their property.

I still use my PSP for GameMusicGear, MP3s, and other audio formats.

Yeah, once you replace that sorry excuse for a music player (it plays MP3 files, so now we can advertise it as a media player!) with one with some actual functionality, it's fantastic for that.

Don't expect Apple to support it just because it's now legal in one more country though.

Illegal doesn't mean having to allow it, of course. It just means that you can't be taken to court.

Nothing will really change either way.
