So to continue my teacherly kick, since it ends on Wednesday...

For their first major paper assignment, the students were to write me a research paper about anything they wanted to. I got some pretty neat topics; Rastafariansim, Wicca, Cannibalism, and so forth. I always think that the students are more into it if they get to choose the topic.

Which leads me to this; what was the most awesome paper you've had to do for school? I personally was allowed to do a final paper on Hellsing, which was very, very awesome indeed because it's one of my top three favorite anime series.

I had a teacher that had us write very short fictional stories

Unfortunately, he was about 60 and had some hangups that seemed to be age-related, like for some papers, you couldn't use a computer or even printed styles of handwriting. You had to use cursive, which I hadn't used in years and still haven't used since. Also, you couldn't take them home. Argh, way to turn a fun assignment into a shitfest. Eventually, he relented and allowed me to use a computer because I couldn't write in cursive fast enough, or some such.

Other than that, in science class I once wrote a paper about an experiment involving different types of tape surviving in Michigan weather. I thought duct tape would be the winner, but it was actually electrician's tape, which my dad still uses because of it.

I'm more science-y than English-y, so I was absolutely elated when I was able to pick my own topic.

There were four papers. I chose the following topics:

-Risks -- analysis of how we decide what behaviors to engage in.
-Policemen and Protesters -- analysis of what went wrong with the G20 in Pittsburgh.
-Applying Newtonian Chaos Theory to Social Structure -- toying with the idea of predicting societal pattens the same way we predict weather patterns (my favorite ).
-Epitome of Consilience -- our course book, Consilience, was about meshing the sciences with the humanities. This one was part two of the third paper.

The most awesome paper that I had to write for school was actually Metroid FanFiction

I was never told what grade it got...

It's not really a paper, so I don't know if it counts... I've never had a great paper to write that I had free reign over.

However, in my web design classes, I pretty much got to design whatever the hell I wanted as long as I used the material that was being taught. I'd often go beyond what was requested in my HTML class.

Fun times. I miss those classes.

Back in 10th grade, we were to write a 5 paragraph essay on a competitive market. So I chose the video game industry. At the time, the PS2 and Xbox were the newest ones out and I compared each one calling it "High Stakes Gaming". Got an A for it, too.

Other than that, I don't remember that much about the essays I wrote. Most of them we're boring topics.

I was allowed to spend about half a semester of a class in high school teaching myself PHP and making a few apps in it.

Once I wrote a paper on game theory and discussed how it was relevant to US presidential elections

"Think of the US Government as a Metroid, leaching off of people..."

I'd read that

No, game theory, not actual games

Basically, I used it to explain why the 2-party system continues in the USA. People could vote for 3rd parties, but often don't because enough others will only vote Democratic or Republican. Americans may remember the whole "A vote for Nader is a vote for Bush" thing in 2004, where voting for Nader instead of Kerry would steal a vote from Kerry and give more chance for Bush to win the election despite Bush being very different ideologically from Nader.

That wasn't the whole paper, and it easily could be a wrong or crackpot theory, but I got an A on it

My best paper would probably be the one about why I draw. However, the best thing I've written for school overall was a Canterbury Tales parody--specifically, an introduction to a modern-day pilgrim, done in the style of the story itself (rhyming couplets, iambic pentameter, etc.).

It can be found here, if you're interested.
